The Last of Us Part I Review Summary

StrongCritic Consensus

Critics have been praising Naughty Dog’s visual and audio upgrade of The Last of Us Part 1, with attention paid to the added accessibility features. There has been criticisms of the price point, however.

The overall visual and audio upgrades have been widely praised, particularly the character models and lighting which have been noted to create a larger sense of emotion and atmosphere. There has also been wide acclaim for the huge amount of accessibility options that have been added, making the game a lot easier to play for those who may struggle.

Critics have been split on the gameplay of The Last of Us Part 1, praising the improvements made to the AI, movement and the added functionality of the DualSense. However, many have also criticised that the gameplay feels like it’s from 2013 (because it is). There have also been comments about how the game hasn’t added new content or features, is missing the original games multiplayer mode and the gameplay can feel old fashioned at times, however, the consensus is that this is the definitive way to experience the single player narrative and it’s follow up DLC Left Behind.

The story has also been applauded by critics; whilst it hasn’t changed from the original game, it still remains effective. Character performances remain strong and the story is well-paced with quiet moments where characters build their relationships receiving particular praise. The game world has also been noted to feel more lived in and realistic down to the added textures and environmental details.

Whilst critics have been saying this is the best way to experience The Last of Us, there has also been criticism based on the price point, with many stating that it’s too expensive when the original PS4 remaster is still a good way of experiencing the game.

Critic Reviews for The Last of Us Part I

The PlayStation classic remains out of reach on PC due to debilitating performance issues.

The Last of Us is truly one of gaming's best, but the PC port is not the ideal way to experience it. Eventually, The Last of Us Part 1 on PC will be in a state where it lives up to or even exceeds its PlayStation 5 counterpart, but right now it's difficult to recommend. Buried beneath the poor performance is still one of the best games ever made, though, so PC gamers who don't mind playing with Medium graphics may still be able to enjoy the incredible story and gameplay if they absolutely can't wait for everything to be fixed.

The question you have to ask yourself before picking up Part 1, then, is not only whether a feast for the eyes is a meal worth paying for, but whether that meal is going to completely satisfy your appetite, particularly if you've already had your fill of the original recipe.

The Last of Us Part I manages to tell a harrowing story of loss and redemption that still holds up despite some of its dated level design. However, its PC port is a big letdown.

If this wasn’t a remake, I firmly believe it would be right at the top of Game of the Year articles as we assess things over a bit of Christmas Pudding. The PS5 has had some brilliant games already, no doubt, but as a fan of The Last of Us, Part 1 is my new favourite exclusive on the console.
