Recommended - Cat Pipes

Cat Pipes is a laid-back puzzle game whose levels are generally of a pleasant level of complexity. However, the controls can feel a bit clunky at times. As no new level elements are introduced, the number of levels is still reasonable. This puzzle game is therefore ideal for a quiet evening.

No Recommendation / Blank - Cat and Ghostly Road
Feb 28, 2024

Unfortunately, the point-and-click adventure *Cat and Ghostly Road* suffers from sub-optimal controls on console. The little ghost stories are interesting, though a bit brief in places. The puzzles vary in difficulty but are well integrated into the story.

Dragon Quest Builders is a successful PC port of the building adventure. It doesn't need to hide behind its sequel. Changes like the superswing and mouse-driven block placement integrate well into the game and make the experience more pleasant.

Since I was primarily interested in the story, 'The Indigo Disk' falls a little short of the first DLC part for me. The double battles didn't quite captivate me, and the structural parallels to the main game in reduced form feel somewhat thin — though the scope is acceptable for a DLC.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince offers lots of monster-catching fun with an entertaining story and some surprising twists.

Essential - Dredge
Dec 10, 2023

Dredge delivers a wonderful horror atmosphere even in the main game. The areas are variably designed across visuals, gameplay, and NPCs. The fishing gameplay is fun and sustains engagement through its variations over the entire game.

The Pale Reach is in no way inferior to Dredge's main game. The gloomy, threatening atmosphere is almost palpable. The narwhal serves as a fitting creature to represent danger in the waters. You barely notice in time when it becomes eerie again—or stays that way—if you've stayed awake too long once more.

Pokémon is truly fun for me again. After 'Scarlet and Violet,' I would have hardly expected that. But in the smaller format of the DLC, the disruptive factors weigh less heavily, and the individual storyline consists of fewer identical segments since it's also less open in its sequence.

Aug 30, 2023

Ashina: The Red Witch is a pixel adventure that stands out through a fairytale atmosphere with a strong connection to Japanese ghost stories. It has an almost Ghibli-esque charm with this focus on worldbuilding.

Death Becomes You is a magical visual novel that thoughtfully explores the ways people shape one another. Grief, memories, the investigation, and Sidney's struggle to find her footing in life all coexist side by side within its pages.

Dragon Quest Treasures warms my treasure-hoarder heart. Although I didn't recognize every treasure because I haven't played most main series games, I delighted in each monster I did recognize.

Alchemic Cutie struggles with poor performance on the Nintendo Switch and repetitive gameplay. With the severe frame rate drops, I can currently only give it a red rating. Otherwise, it would be yellow. Even then, the core gameplay largely consists of constantly gathering resources or slimes with very little variety in the breeding process. The colors are often pretty, but there are far too many of them—at least in its current state. Just having information about which color I actually need would already be very helpful. As things stand, I have to guess and experiment too often to find the right color. Not to mention that I currently cannot save my progress at all. But even if I could, Alchemic Cutie would still feel too sluggish. Even for me, despite usually not having any issues with simply picking up random plants from the ground. At present, I can only advise against the Nintendo Switch version of this slime-breeding game. But even independently of that, Alchemic Cutie is really only suitable for players who can derive enjoyment from collecting repetitive resources.

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is very well suited for both fans and newcomers. Perhaps a bit more leisurely than the main series, the prequel offers a fairytale story and an interesting world to explore.

The Swiss team Naraven Games has created a satirical adventure full of meta-commentaries with Backfirewall, which amused me greatly but also made me nibble at some puzzles.

Mojiken Studio manages the tightrope walk between slice of life and supernatural threat. Loka City appears plastic and vivid. At least, until the place is shaken up time and again, whereby the contrast becomes particularly clear.

Burrow of the Fallen Bear: A Gay Furry Visual Novel is an interactive story with some exciting approaches. The world is interestingly designed and each path reveals new details. However, the dungeon inevitably becomes repetitive in one section as soon as one tries to find multiple endings [...]

For fans of 2D platformers, I would highly recommend Beeny (if the nostalgic look doesn't convince you right away). Anyone looking forward to Super Kiwi 64 and wanting to partake a bit in its backstory can also jump in without any particular affinity for 2D games.

Recommended - Catmaze
Sep 15, 2022

The gameplay doesn’t offer any particularly new ideas, but apart from the imprecise controls, it’s solidly executed. If you’re interested in an unusual mythical world, I’d highly recommend Catmaze; however, I’d suggest playing it in English rather than putting up with the dreadful German text. Plus: cats!
