Chris Capel's Reviews
In the 10 or so hours it took me to finish SOMA I was hooked for the entire experience, from shocking beginning to one of the best game endings I've seen since Portal. SOMA will destroy you emotionally, and that's a very good thing indeed.
If you're an adventure fan and not a terminal coulrophobe Dropsy is well worth picking up, just because it tries to do something different. No dialogue, occasionally terrifying but otherwise heart-tugging story, doable puzzles and a decent-sized open world with day-night cycles, starring a creepy clown and his animal friends. It stutters a bit with execution by throwing you in to the open world too fast with no easy way to get around or changing times easily, and the lack of adventure game staples like a scene skip or hint system do rankle. Nevertheless Dropsy is an ambitious game and that should be savoured, and most definitely tried. Just try not to have nightmares.
There are no interesting or relatable characters and I found myself skipping most of the movies after I just couldn't take it anymore. There are things to like about Type-0 once you get past the boring beginning, but unless you have a high tolerance for really bad anime or are a desperate Final Fantasy fan you might want to skip Type-0.
Give it a few patches and hopefully we'll have a must-have game on our hands, but even right now you shouldn't regret a purchase. Jolly good burglary, old chap.
Nevertheless A Nest of Vipers ups the ante considerably and makes for a fine build-up to the finale. I personally can't wait to see what will happen, and whether my prediction that it's possible to lose the whole game based on your choices pans out.
Massive Chalice is lots of fun and highly addictive. Yes a lot of the best things about it come from it being highly influenced by XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but it not only captures a lot of the spirit of our Game of the Year 2012 but Double Fine also manages to provide their own unique spin on it with the Game of Thrones-style setup.
Game of Thrones is really beginning to kick in to high gear as things start to possibly look up for the Forresters in Sons of Winter, but most importantly the characters start to get much-needed shots in the arm.
Technobabylon is one of the best adventures WadjetEye have ever published, and that's saying something. While the last two Blackwell games beat it by having slightly smarter and more realistic puzzles, Technobabylon still does them well and almost edges ahead by occasionally having multiple solutions.
Those niggles aside, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an absolute triumph and the best open-world RPG around, maybe even the best altogether. The main story stays interesting, the side-stories are better than the main plots from most entire games, the characters and writing are wonderful, and the acting is massively improved from the last two games.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is an incredibly fun standalone expansion to one of the Best games of 2014, and in plenty of places is tougher. Sometimes more frustrating, especially in places with respawning enemies, and the forced stealth section in the beginning is a bit of a misstep, but overall the Wolfenstein gameplay is just as great here.
Overall Broken Age is hugely fun game, but hardly the second coming of LucasArts as many backers probably hoped. Animation, sound, voice acting, dialogue, character, all of this is absolutely top-of-the-range, no game better in the industry, and it all makes the experience worthwhile.
Space Colony is not without its charm or satisfaction, but you'll want all the idiotic colonists to die long before you reach the credits.
It's a good, fun, entertaining extra bit of Dragon Age Inquisition, and if that doesn't excite you then, well, you don't need it.
Unless you're looking for a quick cheap adventure to play on iPad I cannot recommend Fire at all… and it's not even on iPad.
A very good continuation of the story then, but I hope and suspect that the "holy s**t" moments will come in Episodes 4 and 5.
If you liked Evil Within but were disappointed that it wasn't that scary, you should be more than satisfied with The Assignment and when you finish it you'll start looking forward to The Consequence. I certainly am.
Let the series rest now please, or just put a bullet in its head.
If you're looking for a more straightforward stealth experience set in a Bioshock-like world you should definitely consider Republique. Better late than never, I suppose.
I did enjoy exploring the world and solving those puzzles, but in terms of HR Giger-inspired adventure games Dark Seed still beats it hands down.
It's the worst game of 2015 so far, and it'll probably hold that title until Alone In The Dark: Illumination comes out. Avoid, please god avoid.
