Raven's Cry would be a bad pirate game even if it weren't in such a buggy, unfinished (and unfinishable) state.
Instead, there's disaster and disappointment at nearly every turn. With a team that wanted to put the effort in, that had the time or the money to build on this, we might have had an interesting game. Every time I was able to sail to a new island or port, I found myself excited. I wanted to probe around and see what wonders the locale held, but every single time my curiosity was met with tedium and mediocrity. I want to think that my eagerness to explore was a sign that there's something interesting about this setting and this world, but now I think I may have been projecting my own hopes onto a broken, buggy lump.
A game where its most tolerable moments are tedious at best, Raven's Cry is a shipwreck of poor decisions and atrocious execution.
Raven's Cry has very few redeemable qualities. Despite having the potential to be the ultimate pirate adventure, and the inclusion of a ton of features, it's not very fun to play and has quite a few technical issues.
This is a game that had to be reviewed. It had to be reviewed because it's disgusting on almost every level, and the fact Topware is selling it for $54.99 is unforgivable.
There's a fun game buried underneath this total lack of polish, but for now, it's broken and unplayable.
It's the worst game of 2015 so far, and it'll probably hold that title until Alone In The Dark: Illumination comes out. Avoid, please god avoid.
