Samuel Guglielmo's Reviews

My name is Samuel Guglielmo and I like to write about video games. I started playing games when my dad brought home a PlayStation when I was 5 or so, and haven't really stopped since. I have a strong preference towards more action-ey games, but do enjoy artsy fartsy walking simulator games from time to time. I also want to love RTSes but am bad at them. Honestly unless its realistic sports, realistic racing, or a 4x game I'll probably enjoy it. Unless it's bad.

Ugly as sin, terrible voice acting, non-existent story, clunky... all of this describes a game that I ultimately enjoyed thanks to its charm, desire to constantly change things up, and just a feeling that it had a lot of spunk.

2 / 10.0 - Divide
Feb 15, 2017

Divide is an early contender for the worst releases of 2017, thanks to its largely boring story conveyed through awful voice acting, gameplay that can't handle most basics in an effective way, goals that boil down to "wander around until you figure out how to advance", and a ton of glitches. At least the soundtrack is really good.

3 / 10.0 - Weeping Doll

Weeping Doll is a horror game that isn't scary and features a nonsensical story, boring puzzles, and terrible voice acting.

5 / 10.0 - DEXED
Feb 11, 2017

Dexed has the basics right and could have offered something unique for on-rail shooters in VR. However, after the 30 minutes it takes to complete the game, there's little reason to keep playing.

5 / 10.0 - O! My Genesis VR
Feb 11, 2017

O! My Genesis VR is little more than an extended tutorial for DLC that isn't around yet. It's a cool tutorial that got me hyped up for a game that doesn't exist, but its hard to shake the feeling that I just paid for a demo.

Serving as the gameplay and story revival that fans of classic Resident Evil have wanted yet still managing to keep elements fans of modern Resident Evil enjoy, there's something here for everyone and it's the perfect place for newbies to enter the series as well.

6.5 / 10.0 - Wayward Sky (VR)
Jan 28, 2017

Wayward Sky's story is a nice and simple affair and it does a good job introducing people to VR and using it in creative ways. Yet finicky controls, short running time, and general ease keeps the game from soaring.

8.5 / 10.0 - Gravity Rush 2
Jan 25, 2017

Gravity Rush 2 takes the charming original game and builds on it in important ways. The addition of armors makes the combat better, the characters are still fun, the new city is a blast to explore, and its all wrapped in a soundtrack I really enjoyed. Overall, it's a game well worth playing both for newcomers and fans of the original.

2064: Read Only Memories is a fantastic update to the original game that tells a noteworthy story with some great characters supported by mostly good voice acting. There are just a few sour spots that drag down the game and stop it from connecting like it should.

5 / 10.0 - Lethal VR
Jan 13, 2017

Lethal VR actually did work as a shooting range, as I discovered with other games. It's just that, as a game, there's not much else, and what's here is dragged down by glitches and repetition.

If something can go wrong in Rollercoaster Dreams, it does. This is a game that attempts every gameplay idea it can and messes them up one by one without fail. There are no dreams here, only nightmares.

Providing a solid story and some interesting puzzles, The Descendant does a good job taking notes from Telltale's adventure games while still bringing its own ideas in.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier opens up with two strong episodes that have me the most invested I've been in The Walking Dead since the first release. Hopefully fleshing out the characters a little more can push this season to be even more memorable.

Telling one of the most interesting Batman stories in any medium, Batman: The Telltale Series is a really cool take on Batman with some great fight scenes and fun investigations. It just really needs some technical polish.

With Batman: The Telltale Series finally done, City of Light provides an interesting final episode with some great fight scenes and final story moments. Sadly it also has the absolute worse technical issues I've seen in a Telltale episode that do a really good job not letting City of Light end on the high note it should.

6 / 10.0 - EVE Gunjack (VR)
Dec 21, 2016

EVE: Gunjack can be fun in short bursts, but I didn't find much to keep me coming back to the game as it's far too easy to get everything after a couple of hours. Still, it's a fun couple of hours.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood may have almost nothing to do with the base game, but it's a genuinely fun on-rails shooter that shows off some great boss fights and scary moments.

Farnham Fables' second episode has boring gameplay and a story that lacks anything related to an interesting conflict. It also has a strange soundtrack that cuts in and out to make random noises. Above all else, it has scenes that made me feel so uncomfortable that I genuinely believe it's time we have a chat with God about starting over as a species. We clearly don't deserve our sentience.

Without any new content from the last release, broken controls, and an absurd amount of glitches, Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality is really the one that needed surgery.

9 / 10.0 - How We Soar (VR)
Dec 16, 2016

How We Soar shows off some lovely locations, making some great use of VR. More than that, though, it tells a good relatable story, has fun mechanics that take advantage of flight, and is the game that made me stop and rethink how VR can be used for other games.
