As I’ve said in the past, if you’re a rhythm game fan, you’d be doing yourself a great disservice in passing this game up. While it’s not the best entry I’ve played in the series, it’s a very solid release nonetheless.
It’s not a perfect game by any means, but if you need your cute-girls-destroying-monsters fix, you can’t go wrong with MegaTagmension.
If you’re looking to pour a bunch of time into a good story, I would highly recommend Root Double. Info-dumping and disappointing soundtrack aside, it’s an experience that I’m not soon to forget, and it is greatly worth your time.
With the past two series entries being on the PSP, I believe it would’ve made greater sense to stick to Sony’s handhelds in this case. Despite my personal grievances there, though, if you have a 3DS, Code: VFD is definitely worth owning.
Needless to say, this is most definitely not a game for everyone. The plot is a long string of sex jokes, and the gameplay is downright perverse. If you go in knowing to not take it seriously, though, you’re going to have a great time.
With older versions available everywhere, it can make the currently $20 price tag for this version a bit hard to swallow. However, World Tour is still a great game, especially for the old-school-minded gamer.
As an introduction to the world of Berserk, this would be a great title to play, as it definitely piqued my interest to read the original manga. For those burned out on musou titles, I’d say this is still a game to look into. Much of it is familiar, but the structure it provides manages to turn a quickly-tiring style of gameplay into something more engaging.
While the game may deserve a lower score if just gameplay is considered…as a sensory experience and work of art, I feel this title very much makes up for those shortcomings.
I personally hope the series continues to pursue this genre, as the potential exists to create a truly excellent team-based shooter with a bit more work. Much like the rest of the series, if you’re not averse to blatant fanservice, Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash comes highly recommended.
If you’re hesitant to check this game out because it’s marketed to female gamers, I would encourage you to get over that stigma and give the game a shot regardless. There’s a well-crafted story hiding behind the marketing, and reading it from a woman’s point of view is a nice change of pace in the gaming sphere.
Even with the repetitiveness and occasionally ridiculous difficulty, Sundered is still a title I’d recommend to fans of the genre. It’s worth it just for the atmosphere alone, but even beneath that, you’ll find a respectably solid game.
The Vita seems to have become inundated with dungeon crawlers in recent years, but Mary Skelter is one that shouldn’t be overlooked. If you’re raring for a challenge, paired up with a great storyline, this is definitely a title to add to your library.
Featuring a dark atmosphere with some moving moments (and a few touches of immaturity here and there), it’s been a long time since a visual novel has grabbed me as much as this one did. Even with the weaker final quarter, this is a story that comes highly recommended.
Fans of JRPGs, classic and modern, would be doing themselves a disservice in passing on this title. It has a few noticeable quirks and stumbles, but Legrand Legacy is an excellent way to kick off one of my favorite gaming genres in 2018.
Yes, the story is very much lacking, but as I mentioned in the beginning, most don’t seek out fighting games for their story-telling abilities. If you’re going in with pure focus on the gameplay, what you’ll find here is an excellent fighter that can be very welcoming to newcomers to the genre. Veteran or not, I highly recommend giving this title a shot.
I truly have no idea why Idea Factory decided to split this remake into two releases, and I would have greatly preferred having this full story contained in a single release. Regardless, if you enjoyed the story of Kyoto Winds, Edo Blossoms is pretty much essential playing.
As it stands, though, Mothergunship is still a game worth a look. The gun customization, even with the limitations the levels impose, is still a blast to play around with. The character interactions are also a cherry on top, adding a spark of charm that games like this really need to stand out from the crowd.
The game is rather short, lasting around five hours if you’re not trying to find all the collectibles, which may make its asking price of $30 at the time of writing seem rather steep. However, I would still highly recommend checking out this game. Even with the occasionally rough gameplay, the story and aesthetic here make The Missing something that absolutely should be experienced.
Each of the games does have their own flaws, but they mostly arise from being older games seen through the eyes of someone much more used to modern titles. With this in mind, it was easy to overlook them and have a great time playing through them, despite occasionally scaring my cat when I yelled after dying for the 100th time in Rondo of Blood.
Overall, Metro Exodus is an enthralling and gripping experience, marred a bit by lack of polish. The occasional glitches and sometimes rough enemy AI were a bit too noticeable to ignore, but did little to drag down my experience.
