Angelo D'Argenio's Reviews

Personally, I have always thought that Video Games were more than just games, and have sought to enrich my life by finding out what more Video Games can do. I've been a game journalist, tournament organizer, educator, panelist, and even a game themed comedian. I've traveled the world to go to preview events, and been in game jams with indie producers. I've seen events like AGDQ raise incredible amounts of money for charity. To me, games are more than games. Heck, they are more than art, more than sport, and more than community. They are a vehicle for experience, in a way that so few other forms of media can be.
4.5 / 10.0 - NES Remix
Dec 19, 2013

NES Remix is a game that you desperately want to like but just can't. The NES was a great console with great games and the idea of playing them all with cool new mechanics and twists is a good one, but NES Remix falls far short of its potential. It feels rushed, which is appropriate since it released on the same day that it was announced!

In a year filled with blockbuster fighting game titles, SNK Heroines just doesn't do enough to appeal to the fighting game market. It's a shallow game filled to the brim with fanservice, but there are deeper games with just as much fanservice out there.

Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster includes more content than most HD remasters, but does little to fix design flaws from the original.

While it’s understandable that Square Enix wanted to create a Star Ocean more like the fondly remembered early titles of the series, they seem to have forgotten what made those titles great. Whatever it was, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness has none of it.

5.5 / 10.0 - Twin Mirror
Dec 7, 2020

Twin Mirror is the inferior Dontnod offering of 2020, and probably one of their most disappointing games yet. It is mediocre in every sense, failing to live up to the potential of its concept and the reputation of its developer.

5.5 / 10.0 - Windbound
Sep 14, 2020

Windbound is a game that sounds good on paper but in practice, it falls apart. It's a very interesting case study in design that takes inspiration from certain games yet doesn't quite understand what made them fun in the first place.

You can squeeze a few hours of fun out of Scribblenauts Showdown, but frankly this isn't the next-generation Scribblenauts game that fans of the original were hoping for. It has fewer puzzles, worse controls and less replay value than any other Scribblenauts title.

Still, this is once again a second-to-last episode that ends up being the weakest episode. No matter how accomplished I feel, I know that I'm not actually doing anything. I know nothing is changing. I know next episode I'm going to feel powerless again, and everything I did in this previous episode will barely be addressed. I have to admit, Game of Thrones has been hard to get through. So much horrible tragedy befell my characters and I was powerless to do anything about it. I wanted to quit. I still want to quit. But there's one episode left, and coming this far means I absolutely have to ride the story of house Forrester to the end. Just don't expect this episode to feel rewarding. Look at it as something you have to do for the inevitable finale.

Sorry Netflix, but this one needed another QA pass. I will be the first to admit that I didn't finish Age of Resistance Tactics. All it did was make me want to watch the Netflix series again, and I did! Because it's awesome! But I didn't need a $20 game to remind me of that.

5.8 / 10.0 - Sonic Forces
Nov 8, 2017

Sonic Forces is a disappointing rehash of everything that has been done wrong with the Sonic franchise in the past. There were some good ideas here, but none of them were executed in a way that was fun or enjoyable.

3 / 5.0 - WWE 2K15
Nov 17, 2014

I expected the next-gen version of WWE 2k15 to offer a lot more than the last gen version that came before it. While the differences are noticeable, the extra features aren't exactly mind-blowing. If you have both a next-gen and a last-gen console, you might as well pick up the next-gen version if you plan on picking up WWE 2k15. However, if you already picked up the last-gen version, there's not a whole lot of reason to double up. In the end, I stick to the same opinion I had when I played the last-gen version, which was that the game is competent, but you aren't missing much if you decide to skip over it. Maybe WWE 2k16 will bring make the features we loved from years past.

If you are a fan of One Punch Man you'll probably get a kick out of A Hero Nobody Knows but don't expect it to keep you playing long. For every minute of brilliance there is an hour of grinding to go along with it, and that's trying even for the most dedicated fans of the Caped Baldy.

6 / 10.0 - Contrast
Nov 15, 2013

Is Contrast art? Yes, but it's flawed art. While its concept is great and the atmosphere is phenomenal, that's as far as the brilliance goes. The gameplay simply doesn't hold up the weight of Contrast's dark and serious narrative, which proves that art games still need to be actual games.

3.1 / 5.0 - Trials Fusion
Apr 18, 2014

The whole game just feels like it's incomplete. The sci-fi setting is not fully fleshed out. The story is a nice touch by falls flat. The tracks can be innovative but become generic. The mini-games are interesting but shallow. Everything in Trials Fusion is just an inch away from being awesome but, much like a botched motorcycle jump, ends up falling into a pit instead… a pit called mediocrity. Trials Fusion is fun enough, if only because it gives you a chance to return to the Trials gameplay you know and love, but it's easily the weakest of all three Trials titles. Maybe this will change when Ubisoft updates the game for team and tournament modes, which were not working at time of writing, but for now, the game falls just short of greatness.
