Angelo D'Argenio's Reviews
Undertale is fantastic in ways that are hard to describe. It's a love letter to RPGs, gamers, and gaming in general.
Persona 5 is a JRPG that deserves to be played, period. There are few other games that understand their genre as well as Persona 5 does. It knows exactly what Persona fans, JRPG fans, and gamers in general want to see. It's not just a game, it's an addiction, and if you give it a shot you too will find yourself playing and replaying Persona 5 for the better part of 2017.
You can end up in a lot of different places at the end of The Walking Dead: Season 2 Episode 5. I'm not entirely sure how this could possibly transition into a season 3 because of it. However, that's exactly why you should play this game. Play it and make different decisions. Play the whole season over and examine how you got here. Play season 1 again and look at how your Lee raised Clementine. Just play the game, don't stop playing, because it makes you look at humanity in a different way with each play through, not just the harsh and unforgiving humanity that exists in the zombie apocalypse, but the harsh and unforgiving humanity that exists around us in the world we live in now.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a true masterpiece of strategy game design. If this is where the franchise is going, I'm very excited for its future.
If you are willing to put the work into the game, then Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- is awesome, simply awesome. It's a game that you will be playing for years to come, not just a flavor of the week. If you are a more casual gamer, Smash Bros. is still likely more your speed, but for the people who are willing to put the time and effort into learning a new fighting game, it is really hard to do better than Guilty Gear Xrd.
Overall, it was a fun ending to a great series. Its ending isn't satisfying at first, but it grows on you as you think about it. This is the sort of ending that has you talking with your friends for days about it. Everyone is going to look at the ending in a totally different way. But what's the true ending? What really happened? Where are the answers to all the questions you have? If you ask Telltale about it, they'll only say one thing: "These Lips Are Sealed."
Aside from a few script malfunctions and some odd enemy behavior at points, this is a perfect Metroidvania game. If you are a fan of the genre, a fan of Castlevania, a fan of Metroid, or just a fan of 2D platformers in general, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.
Granblue Fantasy Versus is a fantastic game and an early pick for fighting game of the year.
Cuphead is one of the most innovative and interesting games to come out of the indie space in the past few years. It was well worth the wait and will please anyone who likes a good challenge.
If you have a Switch and like JRPGs, then Octopath Traveler is a game you cannot miss. This is the next gen classic RPG we have been waiting for, a fusion of retro, indie, and modern design that could only be played now, and could only be appreciated because of the games that came before it.
If you are a long-time Devil May Cry fan, or just an action game fan in general, then Devil May Cry 5 is a must-buy. It's a refreshing retreat into absurdity inspired by the late 90s yet modernized for current day audiences.
This is one of the best indie games to come out this year. Lab Zero has already shown that they know how to make an amazing fighting game and now they have shown they know how to make an amazing platformer and RPG as well.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is worth your time. While you might not like it if you were a fan of the older Yakuza titles, or if you are looking for something dark and serious, anyone who just wants to explore Japan while having some fun and beating some gangster's faces in old school JRPG style will love this title.
Cyber Shadow packs a lot of quality into a small six-hour package. If you love indie platformers and have a soft spot in your heart for games like Ninja Gaiden and Shatterhand then you won't want to pass this one up.
But all of these are really just minor annoyances. They may have ruined the experience in any other game, but to be honest the story is just so good I would sit through a million bugs to see it through to the end. 2K and Telltale are a narrative dream team that crafts a story unlike anything else you have seen on the market. Even if you haven't picked up Episode 1, even if you've never played Borderlands before, pick up Tales from the Borderlands. You won't regret it.
The Wolf Among Us Episode 3 is once again another fantastic adventure game from Telltale games. No, there aren't many puzzles to be solved, so if you are looking for a more traditional adventure experience you should probably look elsewhere. However, if you want perfect narrative, wonderful characters and a plot that will keep you guessing, then this is the game for you. If you have already stuck through The Wolf Among Us Episode 1 and 2, you should certainly continue with 3, and if you haven't played any episodes of The Wolf Among Us yet, seriously consider picking up a season pass just to try this episode out.
If you played the first Banner Saga, this is a must buy. If you missed The Banner Saga 1, consider purchasing it just so you can give The Banner Saga 2 a chance.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions is not only the best JRPG to come out for the Wii U, it’s likely the best JRPG we have seen in this generation, period. Atlus is going to have their work cut out for them if they are going to one-up themselves with Persona 5.
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most entertaining open world games I have played in a while. It's a truly creative take in an otherwise saturated genre.
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier deserves to be played by everyone that enjoys a well-written plot.
