8.6 / 10.0 - Phantom: Covert Ops
Jun 26, 2020

The idea of this exclusive Oculus stealth VR action is the intriguing and truly simulative ones - as it was in the sci-fi field for Lone Echo - capable of justifying the "only" tracing of the head and hands directly with the structure of the game and its environmental context, behind enemy lines with a military kajack equipped to advance and strike silently. If played on Rift S, the parallel design for Quest is all too evident, especially at a polygonal level, and clearly the variety of the action stops at some point, but the great atmosphere, the good level of challenge, the intelligent writing of the plot and a well thought out length (one night in real time, in substance) make Phantom Covert Ops a VR title however highly recommended.

8.6 / 10.0 - Cosmodread
May 20, 2021

Cosmodread is an excellent sci-fi roguelite VR developed by a studio that was truly a pioneer in virtual reality gaming: their first game, Dreadhall, brilliantly experimented with some new concepts. Cosmodread follows in the same vein, and with a little more variety and graphic detail on PC VR, it might have been a true masterpiece. Nevertheless, it's still a masterful exercise in good mechanics, horror mood and style.

The Following is a powerful and well-made expansion, if considered individually, or an even gigantic experience if purchased with the full game, in the Enhanced Edition. The introduction of the Buggy does not obscure the gameplay of Dying Light but is still very well cared for, as well as consistent with the original spirit.

Horizon: Call of the Mountain cuts the starting tape of PS VR2 with a beautiful game, conceived as a showcase of the advanced features of Sony's new virtual reality system and, at the same time, to honor an already celebrated post-apocalyptic world from a new perspective. Perhaps it is not a really killer application, those role could fall to Resident Evil Village VR, but is still unmissable for those who love the world of Horizon and faces for the first time on PlayStation VR 2.

The second (and final) DLC of Dark Souls III proves to be a far more robust and articulated experience than the first one. The level design is tangled yet magnificent, the content is richer and never ordinary. The perfect conclusion to an unforgettable chapter of the Dark Souls series.

8.5 / 10.0 - Ion Fury

Ion Fury is a love letter to 90s shooters, especially addressed to Duke Nukem 3D. A well written love letter, although it could have been more varied in some parts.

8.5 / 10.0 - In Death
Jul 23, 2020

Both versions of In Death - VR PC systems or Oculus Quest - keep the main strengths of the game, in the form of an "otherworldly" archery roguelite which is not afraid to raise the bar of difficulty in virtual reality. As in other cases, the developers of Sólfar Studios have swapped the best visual performance of the PC edition (for Rift, Rift S, Vive and Index) with the freedom offered by the all-in-one nature of Quest, in a game where the charisma of the setting still comes before the graphic details. The exploration progresses slowly and this lacks a bit of variety, but overall fun is guaranteed.

Space Pirate Trainer remains the most seminal wave shooter in the history of modern VR, a bit like a Space Invaders with a VR headset and room-scale, even on PC without the DX update for Quest. On the other hand, the versus modes of the new version are what the gaming experience lacked and the PvP arenas, well, are not very accessible but incredibly brave when it comes to the potential of virtual reality in gaming.

8.4 / 10.0 - Everspace
May 18, 2018

Rockfish roguelite hybrid confirms all its qualities in terms of gameplay concept, graphic features and pure fun. The epilogue remains a little bit disappointing togheter with the not so exellent enemies AI, but the core of the game is great

Arise: A Simple Story is a puzzle platform game with a soul. It's a beautiful and touching trip through the emotions of the protagonist and the player. Even if short and without words, Arise can say a lot to the heart.

A survival horror with strong adventure components that perfectly balances non-scripted AI with puzzles and a cohesive tale. [OpenCritic note: Mario Baccigalupi separately reviewed the PC (8.2) and PS4 (8.4) versions. His scores have been averaged.]

8.3 / 10.0 - Resident Evil 4 VR
Oct 20, 2021

Once upon a time there was a survival horror that stood out, at the same time, as a masterpiece and a model that would be the cornerstone of the new shooter-like spirit of the series. Once upon a time but also in this very day, again, with Resident Evil 4 VR, virtual reality port not perfect, but very enjoyable.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands manages to offer some fun (and sometimes great) moments, thanks to the various opportunities given to the player, and the magnificence of the Bolivian landscapes. Needless to say, the game is at its best when played in coop with other three friends. There are some small - but not irrelevant - flaws that somehow ruin the overall experience. It could've been bigger, and better.

8.2 / 10.0 - After The Fall
Dec 29, 2021

Grab some Left 4 Dead, a splash of the much-loved arcade VR flavor, and mix it up with a hefty dose of frozen zombie apocalypse. The result will be After the Fall: not a perfect game – variety could use some work, especially – but the best action co-op ever developed in virtual reality, thanks to the experience and talent of one of the most skilled studios when it comes to injecting adrenaline and fun in VR.

It's almost impossible not to compare Kingdom Come: Deliverance with the Witcher series: there's absolutely no fantasy in the Warhorse production, but it boasts a strong character, an enormous quantity of content, choices that matter, and an adult and mature storyline. You can't expect the same visual quality or a comparable level of polish (pun intended), but the battles are like nothing you've ever seen, and the depth of the simulation really drags the player into a beautiful medieval novel.

The new Deus Ex: Mankind Divided DLC offers a nice, challenging experience for the player, thanks to a rich and complex new mission, a hefty level design (whereas the prison setting fits perfectly) and a lot of choices that favour the stealth gameplay.

They Shall Not Pass is a rather good DLC, with a lot of content and a bunch of new, well-designed maps (especially the Verdun battle). It doesn't offer anything truly original or unique, and it's not exactly cheap, but if you're a fan of Battlefield 1, we find no reason why you shouldn't be roaming in the new Behemoth, or shooting enemies in the Fort Aux bunker.

After all the ruckus and the controversies, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 finally reveals itself for what it is: a great Star Wars experience. The new Campaign is definitely well written and thrilling (with some memorable dogfights in the space), and the multiplayer improves everything we already loved in the first Battlefront. There are still some issues with a progression system that relies a little bit too much on randomness, but the game is definitely better off without microtransactions.

For the time being, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds won - pun intended - the battle royale of battle royales. This new "gold rush" spawned a good number of decent titles, but the one created by Brendan Greene if by far the best and funniest to play (even if there's still room for improvement).

The acclaimed Nioh marks its debut on PC without any particular accomplishment or novelties: the PC version, that includes the three previously released DLCs, can either be defined "pure" or "lazy", depending on your point of view. The game is exactly the same we already appreciated on PS4, including the lack of support for mouse and keyboard.
