Jan 30, 2024

Persona 3 Reload stands out as an example of how to modernize a classic, remaining faithful to the original while introducing significant innovations, such as revamped visuals, additional events and new mechanics. However, some concepts remain in the past, such as repetitive dungeon exploration. With its strengths far outweighing its flaws, the game is a recommended experience for both longtime fans and newcomers to the Persona series.

Balatro emerges as a captivating example in the roguelike genre, skillfully blending poker elements with deck-building structure. Paper Mario: The Origami King captivates with its beautiful, varied and humorous adventure. The new title of the plumber's paper franchise presents an elaborate world with a great diversity of activities and secrets that invites us to constantly explore it. The battle system, which is nothing more than a combat-looking puzzle, has some interesting ideas, although many limitations make it tiring. However, the battles against bosses are creative and exciting. The biggest highlight of the game is its great sense of humor present in unusual events, charismatic characters and sharp and fun text. Paper Mario: The Origami King may not be the role-playing game that many wanted, but it is still another creative and remarkable adventure.

8.5 / 10.0 - Avicii Invector
Sep 16, 2020

AVICII Invector Encore Edition presents a great combination of music and visuals. Controlling a ship to the rhythm of the sound is very engaging and fun because of the presence of good mechanics, interesting sequences of notes and intense challenge. The title revisits the work of AVICII by bringing its great hits and some lesser-known tracks in a great selection of pop-electronic music. Even those who are not a fan of the genre can enjoy the game because of the exciting atmosphere and gameplay. There is solidity in its concept and system, but the absence of extras and options is a letdown. In the end, AVICII Invector Encore Edition celebrates the musician's legacy in a remarkable rhythm game.

8.5 / 10.0 - Crown Trick
Oct 20, 2020

Crown Trick uses turn-based movement and roguelike elements to create an exciting dungeon crawler. The highly tactical combat is its biggest highlight: simple concept mechanics and a wide range of skills allow you to build different strategies, and it is very rewarding to create devastating elemental combos. The challenge is intense and fair most of the time, but peaks of difficulty and unbalanced aspects are a little uncomfortable. In addition, an interesting world, great visuals and a clear interface make exploration enjoyable. In the end, the result is a remarkable, intense and engaging experience - I keep trying to escape the Nightmare World even after countless defeats.

8.5 / 10.0 - Disc Room
Oct 22, 2020

Disc Room is an agile and unique dodge 'em up. Trying to dodge lethal discs and other dangers in small arenas is both difficult and exciting, and the fun is to figure out how to overcome the countless complicated stages. There is a good variety of situations in the compact adventure, with puzzles, secrets and a more difficult mode for those willing to face a good challenge. Small technical problems and some balance issues hinder the experience, but options to adjust the difficulty allow players of different skill levels to enjoy the game. Brief and intense, Disc Room is for those looking for a good challenge.

Signs of the Sojourner is an interesting interpretation of the art of communicating and the difficulties of the maturing process. The dialogue made through cards with symbols is simple to understand, but offers depth with the varied effects of the cards and the minimalist construction of decks. The journey through this exotic world is immersive because of the many interesting characters, beautiful locations and unique ambience, in a diversified journey made to be experienced several times. Some details, like the influence of luck and the constant inclusion of useless cards in the deck, bring a little frustration, however, I interpret it as another metaphor of the game - just like in life, we need to do the best with what we have. In the end, Signs of the Sojourner offers a different and unique narrative experience.

The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny is a portable version of the fighting series that manages to adapt its main characteristics in a smaller package. The combat system is surprisingly deep, and many interesting mechanics make the battles exciting, even with some limitations in the controls and the rhythm. In addition to being technically great, the game has a lot of content to unlock, which encourages exploring all modes. The Switch version offers reasonable, if somewhat limited, options. In the end, The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny is one of the best titles in Neo Geo Pocket Color lineup and also a remarkable retro fighting game.

8.5 / 10.0 - Ys IX: Monstrum Nox
Feb 8, 2021

Agile action makes Ys IX: Monstrum Nox an engaging experience. Elaborate scenarios and great navigation skills that invite us to explore every corner are the main highlights. The combat remains frantic and full of energy, with mechanics that offer a mix of trivial action and strategic moments. Besides, the world has a lot of content and the plot has captivating characters. However, there are some issues: uninteresting visual themes, dated visuals and performance problems. In the end, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a great action RPG whose qualities surpass the few problems.

Curse of the Dead Gods combines dungeon exploration and Roguelite in an exciting and brutal experience. Temple exploration is a tense activity because of the traps that, for the most part, are only revealed under light. The combat is exciting, intense and difficult, always requiring quick reflexes and strategic thinking. In addition, there is a good variety of weapons and equipment, and the corruption mechanic brings a sense of constant urgency to the runs. Roguelite features help to differentiate runs, but the grind and limitations in content diversity bring a slight sense of repetition. In the end, Curse of the Dead Gods is addictive — just be prepared to die a lot.

NeoGeo Pocket Color Selection Vol. 1 offers a quality retro experience. The collection features an interesting selection of action and fighting adventures, and all titles together offer hours of fun. When it comes to features, there are basic options and a few extras, and it's a shame that some of the issues in the individual titles persist here. In the end, NeoGeo Pocket Color Selection Vol. 1 is a great way to get to play some of the biggest highlights of the SNK portable console.

8.5 / 10.0 - Dandy Ace
Mar 24, 2021

Dandy Ace proves to be a great action roguelike. Its most notable aspect is the flexible spell card system that allows mixing effects in countless ways, explored in combats that require constant readaptation - part of the fun is precisely finding powerful combinations of attacks. A stylish universe with charismatic characters makes the adventure engaging, and there's plenty of content to unlock. However, the limited variety of maps and situations can bring a sense of repetition in the long run. In the end, Dandy Ace is a frantic experience that is worth checking out.

Astalon: Tears of the Earth offers an immersive adventure through an elaborate world with a retro feel. It's great to alternate between heroes to overcome different challenges, such as combats, puzzles and platform sections, with the constant presence of secrets that encourage you to thoroughly explore the scenarios. The difficulty is intense and dying is inevitable, but this is part of the progression, after all we can strengthen the characters by reviving them. The penalty of defeat is to restart the journey at the entrance to the tower, and shortcuts make exploration more agile, but, even so, this approach creates some repetitive stretches. In the end, Astalon: Tears of the Earth is a remarkable, varied, and fun experience.

8.5 / 10.0 - Griftlands
Jun 14, 2021

Griftlands uses flexible systems to create a remarkable roguelike deck-building RPG. Its best aspect, without a doubt, is the great influence of decisions: allying with someone or annihilating characters have important consequences in the events. In addition, it's exciting to be able to resolve dilemmas in a variety of ways—talk, intimidation, and bribery are valid options. The two types of encounters (negotiation and direct combat) are solid and with good possibilities, even if they are not as varied as other representatives of the genre. Finally, the elaborate narrative aspect makes the matches engaging, but there are some pacing problems. Griftlands is inventive and another great representative of the genre.

8.5 / 10.0 - Roguebook
Jun 16, 2021

Roguebook mixes elements just right to create a competent and enjoyable deck building roguelike. Its big difference is its focus on a pair of heroes, whose unique abilities are used in tactical combat with cards and positioning — there are lots of synergies and strategies available, and it's fun to test the various possibilities. The world captivates with its elaborate fantasy setting, and the mechanics of drawing paths on the map bring freedom to matches. The title invites us to play it constantly with unlockables and customization options, but the limited variety of content makes things a little tiring after a while. In the end, Roguebook turns out to be a unique and engaging deckbuilder roguelike.

8.5 / 10.0 - Ynglet
Jun 8, 2021

Ynglet delights with its adventure focused on sensations. It's nice to control the friendly creature through stages full of floating bubbles, in a smooth progression punctuated by some more complicated parts. The highlight is the surreal and colorful atmosphere with a look that seems to have been drawn with marker pens and a soundtrack that is assembled according to the character's movements. The adventure is not very complex or long, but the duration is correct and compatible with the proposal. In the end, Ynglet is a brief and immersive experience that is well worth it.

8.5 / 10.0 - Mini Motorways
Jul 19, 2021

Mini Motorways uses simple and elegant concepts to create an addictive puzzle and strategy game. It is easy to create streets and roads to connect different locations, but the constant expansion of cities makes this task a great challenge, as there are many elements to consider. The fun is in understanding the nuances and using the various resources, such as roundabouts and bridges, to make an efficient transit system. The colorful and minimalist atmosphere, together with a procedural soundtrack, offers a relaxing and beautiful experience. In addition, there is an incentive to share our creations with options for taking photos and recording small animated images. The biggest flaw is that the stages are too similar, but the agile games soften the feeling of repetition. In the end, Mini Motorways is another one of those puzzles capable of offering hours of fun.

8.5 / 10.0 - Dreamscaper
Aug 4, 2021

Dreamscaper uses dreams and emotional issues to create a great dungeon crawling adventure with roguelite elements. Fast-paced battles are exciting with its wide range of skills that allow you to create numerous interesting combinations. In addition, there is a lot of creativity with various powers out of the ordinary and accentuated challenge, which made me keep trying even after being defeated countless times. The stages are somewhat similar to each other, even with procedural generation, and some points in the battle system are truncated, but, overall, the experience is immersive. Other than that, there is an interesting fragmented narrative about a girl with emotional trauma facing relatable situations developed in two gameplay moments that constantly influence each other in a great way — the actions taken while the heroine is awake expand the dream dungeons, and vice versa. A great looking atmosphere, soft music and surreal tone make exploration a pleasure. In the end, Dreamscaper is a remarkable and captivating experience.
