7.5 / 10.0 - Pirates Outlaws
Apr 12, 2023

Don't let the lack of creativity in the main game mode fool you: Pirates Outlaws will get you addicted to its virtually infinite possible combinations of cards and character abilities. If roguelikes and deckbuilders are among your favorite genres, be prepared to keep doing run after run.

If you can manage not to get too frustrated with the gross bugs, Planet Cube: Edge is a very accurate and satisfying precision platformer. Its eight stages filled with collectibles yield good hours of high-level action, and if that's not enough, completing the campaign unlocks new difficulties.

7 / 10.0 - Trek to Yomi
Feb 15, 2023

Trek to Yomi is a solid product set in feudal Japan, faithfully portraying the Bushido lifestyle and some more general themes such as grief, the consequences of a wrong decision and the complex choice between love, duty and revenge. The title by Leonard Menchiari and Flying Wild Hog may not be such a rich experience in terms of gameplay, but embarking on this cinematic and historical journey filled with content about Japanese mythology pays off — and a lot — the few hours invested.

If you're longing for any other recent roguelike of your choice, I'd say that at the very least it's worth trying out Paper Cut Mansion and finding out how much the game's flaws weigh on your taste, as its qualities certainly set it apart.

9.5 / 10.0 - It Takes Two
Nov 25, 2022

I fully understand who gives greater importance to the graphic quality of a game, but this is a factor that has never been among my priorities when considering a purchase or writing a review. I think that's why it was so easy for me to ignore the visual problems in It Takes Two. These flaws are even more evident in more complex textures like hair strands and clothing fabrics, but I reiterate that they are largely irrelevant. Just call your player 2 and go deep into one of the most enriching journeys in video games.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope comes from the unexpected success of a spin-off that was highly discredited until it proved itself successful. Thus, while much was expected from the sequel, there was a feeling it wouldn't need to do much to repeat the feat. Without any doubt, I can say Ubisoft hit the mark once again.

5.5 / 10.0 - Jack Move
Oct 6, 2022

Jack Move starts off enchanting with a beautiful visual presentation and a rousing soundtrack, but the technological magic quickly wears off. When we finally realize it, the game is over and all that's left is the feeling that the hours spent were not well spent.

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is an excellent game adaptation of the original material. It definitely allows [the player] to live the experience of being a cave raider in the relentless Abyss with all the challenges this job presents. Unfortunately, its merits almost entirely end here. Making the most out of what made Made in Abyss such an enticing story is hindered by obstacles such as a tutorial campaign of dubious efficacy and mechanics implemented without the due care to add features that contribute to good gameplay instead of doing the opposite [, that is, bad gameplay experience]. Fans of Akihito Tsukushi's work will probably be able to ignore these issues and make the most out of the moments in the universe of Riko, Reg and the other characters, but thinking outside this niche, we don't have a good example of action RPG.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection establishes a respectable standard when it comes to collections. Bringing back so many TMNT classics to current systems already makes it an important milestone in preserving old games, but the extra content gallery elevates this work to the status of one of the best products in the game industry in 2022.

The Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a collection that finally gives the undistinguished anthropomorphic hero's main games the treatment they deserve after so many years in limbo, punctuated only by an obscure remake of Door to Phantomile for the Wii.

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined provides a lot of nostalgia towards the titles that came before, especially the first one on SNES. This sentimental longing towards the past has merits, but when put side by side with the new things it offers, it doesn't feel like it's enough of a package to people who never heard of the duo of youkai hunters. The different characters add some cool replay factor to the game, but in the end, I'd recommend it more to those who experienced the series' beginnings on consoles [back in the day].

8.5 / 10.0 - Mini Motorways

It's fun to see how Mini Motorways manages to mix a peaceful and rhythmic environment with a management puzzle that requires concentration and attention worthy of the best urban engineers.

5 / 10.0 - Lumberhill
Apr 21, 2022

Lumberhill ends up being an example of trying to ride a recent success format of games but lacks the details that could make it triumph by its own merits and shine among the best of its genre. There isn't much to say beyond its repetitiveness and lack of identity, but if you're missing the good old Overcooked, maybe the unique job of a lumberjack might strike your fancy?

8.5 / 10.0 - Toodee and Topdee
Apr 13, 2022

Toodee and Topdee is simple in a brilliant way, mixing two ideas otherwise basic, but that together compose a very fun adventure filled with creative puzzle platforming challenges. Its protagonists are charismatics and the dialogue between them and the other characters in the game are humorous and metalinguistic. Ever since I saw it for the first time, I've been fascinated by it and avoided a deeper look to avoid spoilers, waiting for a Switch release. Predictably, it didn't disappoint me, and I forward my excitement to anyone who loves a good puzzle, a good platformer and a good mix of genres.

République: Anniversary Edition is a stealth adventure worthy of going beyond its origins on mobile devices and reaching consoles. The Switch inherits the touch controls but these were to me a minor inconvenience rather than a practical option, as I could use the [Joy-Con] buttons that obviously weren't available on the iOS and Android versions. The game's plot, so intricate and filled with critics and charged sociopolitical discourse can be checked out by Portuguese speakers thanks to the subtitles in PT-BR, even though the translation work is unfortunately incomplete, leaving some minor texts still in English. It is even my gripe with the new content in this anniversary edition: the developer commentary collected during the campaign don't feature subtitles, even in English, forcing us to make an effort to listen to the sometimes rushed talks that can be hard to understand. Putting aside the disappointing bonus, and the camera and movements issues already mentioned, République has a lot to offer for fans of stealth and exploration, as well as lovers of social criticism.

7 / 10.0 - Treasure Temples
Mar 4, 2022

Treasure Temples has that feeling of phone games you play three stages a day while you wait for a medical appointment or that friend who's always late but keep in mind: its difficulty should not be underestimated, offering many hours of mental challenges to the fans of brain-overloading puzzles.

7 / 10.0 - Grapple Dog
Feb 19, 2022

Grapple Dog is yet another unfortunate example of a game that has part of its experience compromised on Switch. Leaving aside the performance flaws, it is fine until the final third of the campaign, when it gets a little tiring. Anyways, this doesn't exclude its qualities as an action platformer filled with good challenges and collectables for those who like to see that 100% in the game files menu, in addition to the Time Trial mode for those who prefer to go really fast.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is the definitive proof of the consistency Spike Chunsoft has shown during the main trilogy of the franchise. The quality leap from Goodbye Despair isn't as high as the one there was in the first two entries — in fact, I felt GD was the best of the three —, but it's a conclusion that hangs onto the Danganronpa identity while having its own personality. The recurrent issues of the Switch port and small barriers of the pacing don't hold back the quality enough for this final chapter to be subpar to its predecessors. A strong metanarrative, with frequent references and fourth-wall breaking, can make Danganronpa's humor maybe a little too bold, but it's undeniably done a great job at ending Monokuma's foolishness — if it'll be the actual ending remains to be seen.

It might even be a big cliché, but it's impossible not to use the term “love letter” when talking about Mario Party Superstars. The care NDcube is finally taking with the franchise is commendable, even though it took so long to do so. Every bit of the game comes together to make Mario Party Superstars a masterpiece that reminds us of why we fell so in love with a spin-off series of Nintendo's mustached mascot.
