Luan Gabriel de Paula's Reviews

Full-time copywriter and gaming enthusiast in my spare time. I probably learned to hold a controller faster than a baby bottle. I grew up with Big N’s greatest classics like Zelda, Mario, and Pokémon. Today, I take advantage of brief moments of rest in my busy life to lose myself in Hyrule, a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, or a world of plumbers and mushrooms.
10 / 10.0 - Baldur's Gate 3
Aug 23, 2023

Baldur's Gate 3 delivers an adventure with the level of detail you've come to expect from great AAA titles. The way it presents itself, its cutscenes, graphics and facial expressions, all help to compose an epic work that combines complex combat with a rich world and a mission system that puts many current games to shame. Freedom is the word that reigns here: the freedom to create your character, resolve your conflicts, enter your plots, explore the world, relate, fight and survive. How you proceed in the Forgotten Realms is up to you.

10 / 10.0 - Alan Wake 2
Nov 9, 2023

Alan Wake 2 is by far the most original experience I've played this year. The way Remedy built its world, characters and story, without caring about industry standards or narrative conventions of the genre, is indeed commendable. The project finds strength in being a double story of horror and investigation, asking the player to think together with its protagonists on a way to use art and rewrite a future that seems immutable.

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is a love letter to the entire history of the franchise and elevates the work FromSoftware has done over the past 25 years, delighting veterans and newcomers alike. It's a safe project, in a way, because it keeps much of the gameplay loop of its predecessors intact; however, it manages to improve every aspect of these components, bringing a unique experience like few action games can do today. A great comeback from an IP that should never have been forgotten.

9.5 / 10.0 - El Paso, Elsewhere
Jan 26, 2024

El Paso, Elsewhere is a melancholic journey about modern relationships, when they go wrong, and how we cling to a life that no longer exists. It's about facing the demons (literally) and finding a way to make the scars go away. It's also a video game, and you don't forget that at any point, with monsters, lots of shooting and an arsenal of weapons to destroy any threat in your path, with lots of style and slow motion.

Ratchet & Clank: In Another Dimension is a true next generation experience. The graphics, even without the famous Ray Tracing, are eye-popping. I tested it in Full HD and also in 4k, and in both cases the game never fails to surprise with its visuals.

The Talos Principle 2 is a unique experience in the way it presents dilemmas, builds the world and instigates the player with solid and challenging gameplay. It's just not impeccable due to minimal problems that make the game a little less fluid, such as extremely annoying bugs.

In addition to the refined base game and the aforementioned technologies, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut includes unlocked frames, the Iki Island DLC, and Legends mode. This makes the package everything PC gamers expected from one of Sony's most unique exclusives. Despite my issues with the open world design, this aspect had little impact on my overall experience.

With great additions such as the Prismatic subclass, new ways of telling your narrative, a refined system that dilutes excessive grinding and a new level of difficulty, The Final Shape delivers an experience that will captivate any player who has had his mark on the guardians' journey. I confess that I entered this era feeling hopeless, wanting to end my story with Destiny exactly at the end of this saga, but I left excited and hopeful for the future of the Vanguard and the Traveler.

Black Myth: Wukong is one of the most impressive debuts in recent years. I don't remember a small company being able to deliver a project as solid, polished and with its own identity as this one. The Game Science team chose a source material full of meaning and importance, applied their passion and experience and transformed a literary classic into an addictive, well-constructed game with a unique identity. Despite problems in the world design, in the writing of some characters and in underutilized systems, the game will certainly please those who waited so many years to finally make their journey to the West and face the dazzling wonders of the mythical world of Chinese folklore.

9 / 10.0 - Silent Hill 2
Oct 18, 2024

Silent Hill 2 puts Bloober Team in the spotlight for treating one of the video game industry's greatest horror classics with respect and reverence. With combat that keeps the player engaged and in constant tension, an environment that makes many versions of the city envious, and sublime sound work, the project can easily rank among the greatest remakes ever made.

9 / 10.0 - Look Outside
Mar 27, 2025

Look Outside is one of the most interesting projects I've played in 2025 so far, and I believe it will find a legion of fans over time. With the surprise release, a good portion of the public will still have a way to go to get to the game, but the project is so solid, different, creative, and thought-provoking that I doubt word of mouth won't have its effect. I really had a scary, impactful, and fun time playing this title, and I hope it won't be long before we see more from Francis Coulombe, a name to keep an eye on in the coming years.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is the best version of one of the greatest classics in the genre. Even with some dated elements in the remaster, it remains a top-tier RPG and a true masterclass in how to properly remaster a great game. It preserves the core essence of the original while adding extra “flavor” and “crunch” in key areas.

8.5 / 10.0 - Killer Frequency
Jun 23, 2023

Killer Frequency mixes elements that are beloved in pop culture, such as the 1980s aesthetic, signature songs, masked killers, investigative plot and heavy humor. All elements come together to transform a simple indie into one of my best video game experiences of the year. For fans of slasher horror movies or investigative works like those of Agatha Christie, this title is a door to paradise.

With the help of fans and a laudable work and dedication, Dumativa's developers alongside Cellbit managed to create not only a game that does justice to Ordem Paranormal's Universe, but also does it as a big project in the Brazilian industry.

Friends vs Friends is the ideal option for anyone who loves a good indie and loves to exchange fire with friends. As the name implies, teaming up friends against friends has never been so much fun. Expect a fun and compact experience, without many surprises, but with a lot of visual identity and very creative ideas on how you can overcome your friends with card abilities or your aiming skill.

8 / 10.0 - Pacific Drive
Feb 20, 2024

With a charismatic voice cast, vast upgrade system and a fascinating mysterious world, Pacific Drive is an experience that is unique in every aspect. I personally have never played anything like it. Similar yes, but like this experience, never. The idea of creating a game based on roadtrip films with a mystery and horror aspect, combining elements of survival and crafting was an assertive choice. The debut of Ironwood Studios is a great success and made me extremely curious about the developer's future works.

8 / 10.0 - Dragon's Dogma 2
Mar 27, 2024

Dragon’s Dogma 2 feels more like a remake or reimagining that improves on the original ideas than an actual sequel. Its plot does not continue the original plot, it makes the same narrative errors and its design bears little resemblance to something actually conceived in 2024. However, the experience remains interesting and fun at all times. The epic combat, exquisite art direction that delivers a true fantasy world, improved vocation and pawn system and the feeling of freedom and exploration, with dangers lurking around every corner, make this RPG a delight for fans of the genre.

8 / 10.0 - Harold Halibut
Apr 15, 2024

Despite some occasional bugs, problems with the plot's rhythm and lack of more engaging gameplay, Harold Halibut does not lose its shine as a work that uses its form well to bring visual charm, without forgetting to work on its content a story with strong text, interesting characters and issues so prominent in human nature.

MechWarrior 5: Clans may disappoint the avid fans of Mercenaries due to the loss of the vast sandbox space and less gameplay freedom, which impacts the gameplay a little. However, the game compensates that with one of the strongest narratives ever within the BattleTech lore. The campaign is immersive, with excellent presentation, sharp writing and cutscenes that keep the player glued. For those who already know a little about the BattleTech universe, Clans is a great entry point. Even though the game doesn't make an effort to help the player fit in immediately, the story development is so captivating that, at the end of the campaign, you'll (likely) be familiar with the dialect and conflicts of the Clans, feeling like you're part of that universe.
