Some great extra content takes a backseat to an extraordinary new gameplay mode that players will get for free from the upcoming "Triceratops" patch. Though the new content is of high quality, especially the new faction, it's overshadowed by a free patch and perhaps isn't as exciting with the addition of yet another human faction.
Strictly just as an expansion, this one is pretty good. The new race is just all around fun to play. The lore is played straight, and there is something undeniably fun about using these huge mechs to sword slash the evil masses apart. Planetfall remains a fun game overall, but a few lingering UI issues and design choices hold it back from being really great.
Regardless The Oathbound faction is incredibly cool, fun to play, and brings another unique playstyle to the game. Star Kings is a powerful final act for the elegant beast of a game that we call Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Previous fans would be doing themselves a disservice by missing out on it.
