Critic Reviews for A Night at the Races

A Night at the Races does an admirable job of balancing difficult, twitch-style gaming with a narrative that's unique to the genre. It's not for everyone, but those who are up to the challenge will find it a bit more rewarding than most high-speed platformers.

Whilst precision platforming is not quite my thing, I can appreciate when a game excels at what it’s set out to accomplish. While some stages felt a bit too tight, I never felt as though a level was impossible to clear. And given the small size of stages and ease of resetting when things aren’t going quite right, A Night at the Races is a great game to pick up and play a few stages when you want to scratch that itch. The story elements are interesting to watch unfold. Although I wouldn’t say worth getting the game solely for those moments if the platforming isn’t your thing. Overall, A Night at the Races is a solid game to dig into, especially if you love a challenge.

From A Night at the Races I liked the way in which Mushy Jukebox has introduced a story in a genre not too used to it, accompanied by an artistic and sound section of a very good level. Simple but effective. The duration of the levels is perfect for the portability of Nintendo Switch. Of course, the standard difficulty frustrates more than one.

A Night At the Races is an interesting if unbalanced narrative experiment. Despite its issues, it's a peculiar indie curio that completely divorces its central arcade game play from its story which results in some odd effects. If you like original experiences, this is certainly worth the hour it takes to complete.
