Critic Reviews for Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains

Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains is a fantastic version of Monopoly that switches up the tried and true formula for something experimental and new. Aside from some balance issues, the game has something for fans of the series to enjoy, and non-fans can still get a kick out of conquering the galaxy.

The digital version of the Monopoly board game, featuring characters and locations from the Star Wars universe, is here. And it's quite boring. While the atmosphere of the popular sci-fi universe is excellent, the gameplay is very limited. You'll mostly just be watching and waiting for your turn.

Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains is a fun twist on the good old Monopoly formula, trading some of the depth of its property-system for interesting class-based team fights, with a nice Star Wars presentation to boot. It’s quite feature-complete and only features a handful of shortcomings, though I would say that the game’s focus on triggering ‘GO!‘ events can make matches even more lop-sided than normal if someone gets particularly high dice rolls on the regular. Still, for fans like me of the iconic board game and Star Wars enthusiasts, there’s a couple of fun hours to be had here – in local and online play alike.

However, not everything hits the mark. Precisely because the game aims to be smarter and faster than regular Monopoly, you sometimes feel that it stays a bit on the surface. The abilities and team choices are fun, but not so deep that every game becomes completely different. It is more of a strong twist on Monopoly than a completely new strategy game. That is fine in itself, but it also means that the element of surprise wears off a bit after a few games. Fortunately, there are quite a few different characters to choose from, ensuring that the first few games certainly feel fresh. Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains has been approached more intelligently and extensively than you might initially think. The switch from classic money monopoly to a faster game centered on board control, teamwork, and battles for locations works surprisingly well. The Risk-style dice battles work well for fighting for locations, which also fits the universe well. The excellent Star Wars presentation helps even more with this, as do the character abilities and the beautiful locations on the board. Of course, Heroes vs Villains remains Monopoly at its core, but as a Star Wars game, this is a successful variant with interesting additions.
