Critic Reviews for Alpha Nomos
Roguelike rhythm action game in which you use instrument to defeat enemies in time with the beat
Rhythm-based roguelite action game that could benefit from an update patch or two
Alpha Nomos leans heavily on its strengths, and doesn’t pay much attention to anything else. A deep appreciation for music and hack-and-slash combat drives the game, and slaying enemies in time with the beat can be incredibly fun. However, a lack of variety will keep some players from spending much time with it. Its relatively short run time keeps it from overstaying its welcome, and is a solid addition to your library as a fun game to spend an hour or two a day.
For those who enjoy more intuitive games, the rhythmic foundation of Alpha Nomos offers an interesting mechanic for straightforward combat. However, the basic presentation and a significant, sluggish start can make the overall experience unengaging—potentially leaving the player feeling that the title lacks a certain charm.

Setting the technical hiccups aside, Alpha Nomos fails to distinguish itself from the vast multitude of indie roguelites. On the contrary, were it not for the musical core gameplay and the character design that captivated me, it wouldn't stand out in any way whatsoever. The roguelite design not only offers no surprises but features such a sluggish and monotonous start that veterans of the genre would rather move on to the next title on their list. Yet the fundamental combat system held enough potential. I may not be so skilled when it comes to tempo and rhythm, but I do recognize the concept of using these musical elements as a combat foundation as praiseworthy. It would simply have been better if Alpha Nomos had also forged an individual identity beyond that with more variance or interesting moments. As it stands, the memory of the game will fade far too quickly.

Alpha Nomos is sadly a disappointment. Despite its incredibly interesting concept, the actual gameplay just doesn't hold up compared to other recent roguelike releases. Both the action game elements and the rhythm game elements of the combat feel underdeveloped and lead to an experience that never feels better than just "Okay." With very little variety between runs and technical issues also dragging the game down, I find it incredibly hard to recommend this game to others.
Alpha Nomos is an indie surprise in the best sense of the term: fun, visually distinctive, and featuring a spot-on soundtrack that does more than just accompany you.

Alpha Nomos can be a little repetitive at times, and it can feel as though there isn’t an abundance of content to unlock, but it still remains a fairly fun and distinctly creative experience throughout. The game’s unique mix of rhythm-game mechanics and roguelike progression, paired with its fun story and characters, makes for an undeniably memorable experience.
