Critic Reviews for Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed
Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed has fun combat that is trapped in repetitive levels filled with unrealized potential.
All in all, Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed was a decent distraction on handhelds, but a harder sell on PC when compared to the number of alternatives available, both from its own franchise and the Musou genre in general.
Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed is a fun deviation from the series’ turn based formula. The game is a really polished experience ranging from the UI, cutscenes, Art and soundtrack. Action Unleashed is one of the better games in the series and should be in your to-buy list if you’re a fan of the series.
Sorry Neptune, but with this shortage of content (though what is present is at least 'decent'), and outside of the map variety, there isn't much choice for a score. This isn't a PC game. It's a port of a portable title and it shows. Maybe some of the flaws, such as character variety, will be fixed later on through DLC, but… the water is warm and, while people may be more than willing to welcome Hyperdimension Neptunia into this new field, this seems more than willing to just sit on the edge and let its feet dangle into the pool than anything.
Though Neptunia U may not be the best installment of the franchise, it is still a very welcome addition. Admittedly, gameplay gets quite tedious with the constant slaying of hordes, but it is a game that will never tire in the long-run. The main story can be beaten in a few hours, but there is never a lack of great comedy in between. Remember to also take advantage of the viewer option. It is there for a reason, especially for situations where clothes are constantly getting ripped.
It cannot be denied that Neptunia U is a great addition to the Hyperdimension franchise, while the action may become repetitive after playing in long bursts; it’s an enjoyable and rewarding game. The characters remain charming; the puns continue to be hilarious and best of all the world of Gamindustri is still an absolute joy to return to.
It’s safe to say that while Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed may not be the very best Neptunia has to offer, it was nonetheless an important entry in the series that acted as the jumping-off point for some of the franchise’s better installments in more recent years. And if nothing else, it deserves our respect for that!
