A fascinating journey through the visual history of 2D platformers, although the gameplay doesn’t always match the quality of the many classics it relies on for influence.

A Pixel Story is a fun stroll through a computer that can be quite challenging at times. The story is engaging and the different characters that you meet along the way are both interesting and original (even if they were inspired by past games).

Although I was ultimately bested by the game’s brutal difficulty, I can still recognize the excellent design philosophy at work here.

Overall A Pixel Story is a ton of fun and aside from some minor glitches here and there it was a delight to play. Though I do recommend taking breaks if you’re struggling with any of the puzzles because it can get quite frustrating.

If there's one thing thats not in doubt, its that A Pixel Story is immensely good fun and will leave you with a smile on your face. Its bright and colourful, beautifully presented, with great gameplay and so many nods to old films and video games that youll be left wondering how it keeps itself from bursting at the seams. What its really lacking is a true spark of individuality, a single unique element to make it explode off the screen and grab your attention. It ends up relying too much on nostalgia to tug at your heart strings, rather than trying do it itself. Theres a very good chance that youll love A Pixel Story as much as we did, but dont be surprised if you find yourself wishing it was slightly more than it is.

A Pixel Story is a hugely fulfilling experience. Its perfectly pitched difficulty ensures that it's challenging but never frustratingly so, and above all, it has that elusive 'just one more go' quality that will keep you hooked.

For the price though, and the chance to wander through a history of video gaming from start to finish, A Pixel Story more than does the job to deliver a world that has been inspired by memories gone by.

A Pixel Story is as close to perfect as a game can get, but it falls a bit short. It highlights a lot of the issues other Metroidvania games have, and can feel like an aimless walk from time to time. Rest assured, though, every annoyance you stumble across will be paid back in kind, and with a game so fun and enticing, you may find yourself lost in the System, as well.
