Critic Reviews for Defenders of Ekron
It's a truism that writing up reviews on mediocre games is the most difficult aspect of games coverage.
If you're looking for a standard Japanese shmup, Defenders of Ekron is going to disappoint, but this Chilean gem offers a nuanced level design that allows it to excel, becoming far better than most of its contemporaries through a revolving door of fun, challenging encounters and enough content to leave you more than content.
Defenders of Ekron is an interesting game that mixes genres with some success. The action sequences are solid and provide players with several variations on a winning shoot ‘em up formula to keep things fresh. There's a considerable challenge in this one that will test your skills in full, and if you give it a try, you'll see that the overall action and exploration segments come together to give us an amusing indie release on PS4.
The visuals in Defenders of Ekron are great, making you stay on target during your quest. I really liked the game's cutscenes as well, not to mention the great writing. You can tell that a lot of love went into making Defenders of Ekron, so kudos to In Vitro Games for giving us a very entertaining and polished PS4 release. The game does stand up as a different type of shoot 'em up release, with fast-paced action mixed with exploration and some puzzle solving. All in all, I recommend Defenders of Ekron on PlayStation 4.
Even with its flaws, Defenders of Ekron is a fine title for fans of both action and adventure. The campaign is filled with fun scenarios and thrilling boss battles. Controlling the Anakim is an effortless process. Players will quickly adjust to its many forms and abilities. While it is very much a double-edged sword, the massive amount of variety still works in the game's favour. Every stage is different in its own way, ensuring that the player is rarely bored.
Defenders of Ekron is a Metroidvania-esque mech game, which sounds like a certain recipe for success. While the action is fun when everything is working well, the game-breaking bugs destroy whatever enjoyment this title had going for it, and they are too great to be ignored or overlooked.
Defenders of Ekron is an ambitious title that treads new ground, but the execution leaves something to be desired. It is just far too tedious, and though the new elements are welcome, the core foundation needs some work.
