Soulblight is a dark, unforgiving, top-down action roguelike luring you to cross the thin line between good and evil. Instead of XP grinding, it introduces a Tainting Mechanics. While traveling through the shattered reality of the Sanctuary, you will receive personality traits based on your choices. These will be the main source of your strength. To harness them, you will have to act accordingly. Becoming an alcoholic means that you will be rewarded for getting drunk, but from that point being sober might prove to be unbearable.

Tons of weapons, armor, and utility items

Dynamic and tactical combat build around stamina management and distance control

Optional stealth approach that complements fighting

Randomly generated, visually breathtaking levels

High difficulty level emphasized by permadeath mechanics

Gameplay-driven narrative

60 / 100

Soulblight is a top-down action roguelike that features simple yet tough combat. The tainting mechanic and injury effects are clever and keep things interesting. Unfortunately, combat is hard to master, and you may end up dying a lot more than you're willing to accept.

6 / 10

Soulblight brings some interesting action RPG elements to a roguelike game and its idea of replacing the usual experience points with personality traits is worthy of praise, as is its injuries system. Where Soulblight fares less well is on its rather frustratingly difficult combats and a somewhat repetitive nature on the short term, which adding to its unambitious art style leave the feeling that thie game could have gone further.

I really wanted to like Soulblight, but sadly I don't think this is a game I will be coming back to.

Soulblight isn't built for everyone, even diehard rogue-like fans. One day I'll venture back to the Soul Tree, I'm sure of it. Just don't think it'll be anytime soon.
