Critic Reviews for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is a game that manages to be both a homage to the classic games of the past, while also being one of the most original RPGs in years. It's just a shame that the console version of the game has so many issues, as they really hamper the experience. It's advised that people play this gem of a game on PC in order to experience the best version of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, but the drawbacks of the console version can be overlooked by people who are really patient or don't mind messing around on their phone every couple of minutes when going back to a town to restock on times.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition brings the epic CRPG to consoles, and the majority of it is excellent, although there are far too many load screens that seem to go on forever.

The console port of Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire has the same great story, characters, and gameplay of the PC version but is marred by technical problems and load times.

It's the amazing RPG of 2018 with all the systems and mechanics well adapted to console controls, with a superb writing and translation. But, all that great things get muddier because of the long and habitual loading times: 60-90 seconds for every single time we cross a door, change area... Until a patch fixes it, it's a pain in the ass.

So, for those keeping track at home, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is an extremely authentic port of the PC experience that stays very close to the source material. It certainly doesn't hurt matters much when you consider how legitimately stellar the writing is. If it weren't for the unfriendly control scheme and obscene loading times, this could very well have been an early contender for best PS4 RPG of 2020. Regardless, it can still easily stand on its own as an extremely solid title that's very much worth your attention.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition is a fantastic role-playing game with an interesting story, deep quests and a great world. It will definitely please all fans of classic RPGs. This is the case when the walkthrough can be made more convenient, but do not lose the depth of mechanics and complexity of tactics. The flexible features of the dialog system allow you to play it in completely different ways, and the only thing that spoils the impression is technical problems on consoles. But if you play it on a PC, you can safely add one point to the final score.

A soaring achievement in the genre, very minor technical issues aren't enough to detract from the fact that Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire: Ultimate Edition is the first must-have game of 2020 and the finest RPG in an age. Adventures don't come much more essential than this.
