Critic Reviews for Random Heroes: Gold Edition

It’s all largely competent, but its main concept could have been taken much further.

While Random Heroes may make a decent mobile game, the updated version—Random Heroes: Gold Edition—isn't really up to par, especially for the asking price of $4.99. It is an excellent example of why some games should stay on mobile devices.

Random Heroes is a fun retro looking game at a cheap price. I consider this a good coffee game. By that I mean it’s a game you can shut your brain off and play through a few levels at your own pace. Ideal for a quick coffee break, a wait at the bus stop, or if you just don’t fancy an in depth game. Unfortunately, it’s simplicity is also its downfall. Just a bit more depth to the game’s mechanics and some overall polish would make this stand out much more. It’s a cheap title which I had fun with. I was left wishing for just a bit more though.

Random Heroes: Gold Edition reminds me of a simpler time in gaming. When consoles used cartridges, control pads had wires and three buttons, and simple sprites were cutting edge. Times have changed, we’ve moved on, but some developers still look back to those early days for inspiration.

The number of clichés in Random Heroes: Gold Edition is high, but that wouldn't necessarily be a negative thing if the game had at least one really innovative aspect. The problem is that it does not, and can easily be compared to a generic action game for mobile devices. The use of pixel art may even attract players who like the style a lot, but the extremely simple gameplay and the false impression of relevance of the variety of content can make them lose interest in the first levels.

Random Heroes: Gold Edition is an entertaining arcade that will give us a few hours of solo fun without too many complications. Recommended only if you are looking for something simple and without too many complications.

While I'm a moderate fan of mobile conversions that have a simple look but satisfyingly accessible play when the experience is phoned in I won't hesitate to say so...
