Max & the Book of Chaos is a fun action game that's plagued by its numerous faults. However, if you can look past the unpolished areas, there's a solid game that has some cool boss battles and great progression.
Summary Ultimately this feels like something you would find off of Newgrounds a few years ago, just a little longer than normal. As a game, it certainly functions, although not particularly well or with much depth. Did I have fun? Surprisingly yes. I've played worse. I've played a lot worse. Unfortunately, that doesn't particularly allow me to call this "good". It functions as a game, and it accomplished the main reason for existing, but it doesn't swing too much in any other direction, whether good or bad.
This is one of those titles that screams being up my alley, featuring some relatively arcade-style shooting action and excitement...
Max And The Book of Chaos is an overall worthy addition to the run n’ gun genre. Levels are bite-sized, perfect for quick bursts of play, there’s decent enemy variety and bosses are fun, lengthy, and challenging. Unfortunately, mostly caused by the single screen level design, the game feels like it gets repetitive quickly. If you can overcome the fact that the game’s difficulty ramps up pretty quickly and the special weapon picks up are useless more often than not, you definitely don’t want to skip Max And The Book of Chaos.
