Reviews for DOOM: The Dark Ages are pouring in, and while it currently has a great score on Metacritic, it's looking like it won't get out of the large shadow that DOOM Eternal cast. DOOM: The Dark Ages is a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, having a medieval setting and tone. The game's final trailer revealed quite a bit of information about the game's story, surprisingly, since narrative has never been a major focus of the DOOM franchise. Now that reviews are out, it seems like The Dark Ages's "stand and fight" motif might be a step back for some fans after the high-speed gameplay of Eternal.

According to Metacritic, DOOM: The Dark Ages is currently sitting at an 84 Metascore, with 42 reviews in. DOOM: Eternal's Metacritic score stands at 88, for comparison. The overall score may fluctuate as more review scores are added, but for now, the game's debut is not as well-received as Eternal's, despite an 84 still being an impressive score.

While the 84 score might cause some knee-jerk reactions that the game is worse than Eternal, the score fits pretty well with how the rest of the reboots has been reviewed....
