Bloober Team has been trying to carve out a name for itself in the horror genre for years now to middling results, with The Medium and Layers of Fear casting doubts over many of its future projects.
However, last year, after a marketing campaign mired in scepticism, it finally proved its mettle with the Silent Hill 2 remake, updating a treasured classic for a new generation to critical acclaim. But without the foundations of an all-time great to work with, can Bloober still deliver the goods?
Kind of. The reviews are in for Cronos: The New Dawn, and while they're far from bad, it doesn't measure up to Silent Hill 2. The new sci-fi horror debuted to 78 on Metacritic, only slightly edging past the studio's earlier, more divisive work.
"Cronos: The New Dawn has an excellent, thoughtful premise that feels dark and dangerous, but does a poor job of executing on its promising sci-fi ideas," reads Game Informer's review. They scored it a 7.75 out of 10, citing that the 12-hour experience left them "shrugging [their] shoulders".
