Star Wars Outlaws Port Shows That Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Are A Necessary Evil

Perhaps the most controversial "feature" of Nintendo's newest console is the game-key card.

In summation, a game-key card doesn't contain the full game on the physical cartridge. Instead, it's a "key" that lets you download the full digital version of the game onto your Switch 2 console. Despite being a digital download, you'll still need to insert the physical cartridge into the Switch 2 system to play it.

A large majority of third-party games for the Switch 2 use this technology; Cyberpunk 2077 is a notable exception to this.

Jan Rosner, CD Projekt's VP of business development, said that putting the entire game on a physical cartridge was "the right thing to do," and said other studios should "not underestimate the physical edition." However, it may not be possible for other studios to follow this advice.
