Even if you don't play Final Fantasy 14, you may have seen the MMO's infamous low-poly grapes (above) that went on to become a recurring meme within the community. The grapes have the appearance of an image pasted over a static shape, without depth or texture.
Square Enix is in on the joke, as the studio chose not to include the grapes in last year's massive graphical overhaul. In 2023, a physical replica of the grapes was included as a prize at the game's Fan Festival.
As spotted by Game*Spark (translated by Automaton), observers have noted the resemblance of Pokémon Legends: Z-A's vineyards and grapes to their oft-ridiculed equivalents in Final Fantasy 14.
Pokémon's grapes are flat, and they've been placed atop a flat vine texture. It's similar to every environment in Legends: Z-A, a game full of flat surfaces without depth.
Memory may have been a concern for Game Freak, as Legends Z-A is only 4GB on the original Switch and 7.7GB on the Switch 2. Square Enix doesn't have the same problem with Final Fantasy 14's mammoth 140GB file size.
