The Original FF7 Is Getting A New Release On Steam, But I Literally Cannot Tell You Why

"Final Fantasy VII - 2013 Edition." Get used to seeing those words, because if you presently own Square's landmark RPG on Steam, that'll soon be how it's referred to in your library. Why? Well, because a 2026 edition is en route, of course. Which, I assume, will not be called "Final Fantasy VII - 2026 Edition." Just... "Final Fantasy VII."

What's the deal? I don't know. Does anyone? Square themselves, presumably. What sorts of changes can we expect? Only they can say, and as of this writing, they've not elected to do so. Instead, they've given folks a heads-up that the current version of the game will soon be unavailable for purchase, along with some guidelines on how to go about snagging the—hopefully?—better version to come.

It's all I've ever wanted, Square Enix. The PlayStation classic Final Fantasy trilogy with the enhanced-resolution characters seen in more recent ports, and a return to form for the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds seen in VII through IX, that have been retroactively made all kinds of muddy due to the process used when constructing those ports. It makes FFVII and FFIX in particular kind of a headache for me to replay without mods, or...
