After the reveal of a wedding ring on Leon's left hand in Resident Evil Requiem, the fandom has been abuzz with speculation about who could have hitched everyone's favourite counter-bioterrorist, Leon S. Kennedy.

A popular theory that was doing the rounds among international fans was that Leon could be married to Sherry Birkin, a fellow federal agent and recurring character in the series. This was based on a line uttered by Sherry in the Japanese version of the game, where she refers to Leon as "anata," a second-person pronoun that roughly translates to "you" but can have a variety of meanings depending on the context and the relationship between the two speakers. There is a context where anata is used by wives to refer to their husbands, but that is not the context in which Sherry is speaking to Leon.

This pronoun was only used once by Sherry, but it was enough to send the international fandom into a frenzy of speculation about a potential relationship between the pair.
