Marathon reviews are finally starting to pour in, and things aren't looking great for Bungie's extraction shooter so far. At the time of writing, it holds an aggregate Metacritic score of 72, making it the lowest-rated game in the studio's history.
Previously, that record was held by the original Destiny, which was lauded for its snappy gunplay and "ever-more involving FPS depth," but widely criticized over its "thin story" and "shallow" design. Marathon likewise has seen praise for Bungie's signature "top-notch gunplay" and "bold artistic style," but has drawn flak for its "overwhelming" UI, brazen monetization, and surprisingly "conventional" approach to the genre.
Halo unsurprisingly rules the roost for Bungie, with the very first game achieving a near-perfect score, while Destiny 2 lands middle-of-the-road alongside Myth 2: Soulblighter, leaving Marathon in last place behind the original Destiny and the criminally underrated Halo 3: ODST.
Of course, 72 isn't a bad score by any stretch, and there are only six critic reviews right now, so this list is subject to change. Marathon could overtake Destiny in time, especially with Bungie asking reviewers to hold off until the first season drops. But it's hardly a...
