Nvidia's reveal of DLSS 5 technology has been met with mirthful disbelief at best and scorn at worst by the gaming community. Ostensibly, the technology is supposed to dynamically improve a game's textures and visual quality.

In practice, DLSS 5 absorbs an obscene amount of power to constantly filter a game using generative AI, turning handcrafted textures into a slop-fuelled approximation of what the technology believes it should look like.

Nvidia's demo proved especially controversial when it changed Resident Evil Requiem's Grace into a "yassified" version of herself, with plump lips and a button nose. The technology also fails to differentiate lighting from colours, turning the light filtering through Grace's hair into blonde highlights.

There's also the fact that the technology upscales textures to forms that aren't consistent with the game's animation style, giving everything an uncanny feeling.

Nvidia's chief executive officer, Jensen Huang, responded to the backlash by saying that gamers were "completely wrong" about the technology, and that developers could fine-tune any aspect of DLSS 5 they want to ensure the result is consistent with their game's art style.
