No Man’s Sky Updates Take More Than Twice As Long To Engineer On Switch And Steam Deck

No Man's Sky is entering its tenth year, and the last few have been really special for the space exploration hit. While it had a rocky launch, Hello Games has released a constant flow of updates, most recently one that turns it into a Pokemon game, which has made it what it is today.

There was never any doubt that the effort Hello Games put in has been anything other than behemoth, but I don't think anybody could have predicted the disparity between PC/console and handheld versions of the game. It's seemingly huge, though, as one of the company's programmers has revealed that handheld updates can take two to three times more time and effort.

Since its launch, No Man's Sky has received no fewer than 40 major content updates, 14 of which have come in the last two years. Worlds Part 1 and Worlds Part 2 fundamentally altered the game's universe, adding billions of new planets alongside other changes. Voyagers completely overhauled the shipbuilding in the game, and most recently, Xeno Arena turned the game into an alien-capturing simulator.

Naturally, the work that goes into each of these updates is immense, especially given the amount of new content...
