Double Fine has taken a pretty big step out of its comfort zone and released a multiplayer game, Kiln. Bold, and always a risk for any studio without much experience in that arena to take the plunge. Sadly for the Psychonauts developer, at this early stage, it doesn't look like its roll of the multiplayer dice is paying off.
It seems there were no review copies of Kiln ahead of its release last week, so even though it's been out for a few days, the first reviews of the latest Double Fine title are only just starting to appear. Unfortunately, they don't paint a very positive picture. Kiln currently has a 68 on OpenCritic based on its first ten reviews, and its highest score of those ten is an 8/10.
The biggest takeaway from most of Kiln's first reviews isn't that the game is bad by any means, but that there's not much to it. It currently has one game mode, Quench, and five maps. That means things get repetitivie fast which likely explains why its poor launch day player count on Steam has gone from bad to worse.
Kiln launched to less than 200 players on Steam last week....
