Gecko Gods is a big adventure for the smalls paws of an unlikely hero.

Gecko Gods is a fairly low-priced indie made with love, and I respect the team and what they've achieved even if I was frustrated for a lot of the experience. Some people will love the novelty of playing as a gecko. For me, although I made my peace with the decision, I do wonder if a slightly different approach could have increased my own engagement and made me believe more in what I was being asked to do.It's difficult to tell whether some of my frustrations come down to simply taking the wrong turn – or whether I missed a single line of text somewhere that might have set me on a more reasonable path. But I don't think I missed anything. If you want a short puzzle experience, and you like the idea of playing as a gecko, then Gecko Gods may well be worth your time.

I'm sad that Gecko Gods didn't ultimately resonate much with me. It's a game with clear indie charm and care poured into it, but also one that never clicks in terms of puzzles, platforming, or exploration. The presentation is nice, but it's also held back by many technical hiccups, both cosmetic and core progression-based alike. The devs do seem eager to keep improving this one, but it unfortunately wasn't quite ready for release.

Gecko Gods is a chilled out joy to play. Perfect for a lazy summer evening with a cold drink and a fan in your face, the sheer thrill of discovery is absolutely nailed here. While there may be times that you're not quite sure where to go, the focused level design and island layout means that exploration is always enjoyable and you'll find the way forward soon enough. Whether you're looking for a nostalgic treat or simply want to hang out with a cute little lizard for a while, Gecko Gods is sure to delight.

Featuring a cute lizard protagonist and an imaginative archipelago of puzzles, Gecko Gods is just too rough around the edges to earn its stripes. At its best, it emulates the same wonderful feeling of free exploration you get from the Zelda series, but these moments struggle to shine through frustrating controls and low graphical fidelity.

As a whole, Gecko Gods is a very charming game that ticks all the right boxes in what makes a good open-world puzzle adventure game.

To put it all in a joking manner, Gecko Gods feels like what would happen if Gex took a bit of a chill pill and went on a vacation, then reverted to some of his basic instincts instead of spy skills.
