Venerable video game company Sega is the latest company to come to the realization that there isn't a pot of gold at the end of most paths for Games as a Service titles. Indeed, it its fiscal year end filing it announced that it was cancelling its"Super Game" initiative begun 5 years ago and moved developers away from free to play development over to full game development.
Sega was cagey about what the Super Game was beyond that it was highly ambitious throughout its development. Meant to release by the end of fiscal year 2026 (so... now) it was to be a game that stood "head and shoulders above normal games", perhaps an AAAA game if you would. It was focused on the entire gaming ecosystem, including on the interaction of streamers and their audience at least in how executives talked about it.
The Super Game isn't the only Games as a Service title that Sega has cancelled in recent years. Notably back in 2023, they cancelled the live service shooter Hyenas and restructured their European studios.
