Recently, Obsidian Entertainment pushed a couple of updates for the original The Outer Worlds, along with an announcement that the base game will be delisted while The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice—which includes each of the game's expansions and minor remastering—will continue to be sold.
In light of this, those with the vanilla version of the game on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 were offered the chance to upgrade to the Spacer's Choice edition of the game for free. To avail of this offer on Xbox and PlayStation 4, players also needed to own the expansions because of various licensing issues.
However, on the day of the delisting, the upgrade didn't go through for many players, which led to widespread frustration and accusations that Obsidian had lied about the upgrade to encourage sales of The Outer Worlds. Several players reportedly bought the base game before the upgrade went live to avail of the free upgrade.
In a statement given to IGN, a spokesperson for Obsidian's parent company, Microsoft, responded to the controversy.
