The Digital Fix's Reviews

5 / 10.0 - F1 2014
Nov 12, 2014

F1 2014 feels stripped back compared to last year's entry to the point where certain popular features have been removed. However, is there still enough content here to tide Formula One fans over until the series' makes its debut on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One?

In doing this, Unity is not the huge leap forward that a next-gen Assassin's Creed promised it would be - rather it's a familiar adventure dressed in exceptional decoration. The artistry to be found in Paris far outweighs the by-the-numbers story. In essence it's more Assassin's Creed, then - that will tell you all you need to know if you're mulling over a purchase. Perhaps this is why this Assassin's Creed feels as though, like its time-spanning storyline, it has one foot in the future and one in the past.

With Lords of the Fallen we have the first true "inspired by" Dark Souls game and the developers have had a good stab at recreating the wonders of that title and ended up delivering what can be described as Dark Souls for the MTV generation. It's a big, brash and colourful rendition of what makes the genre wonderful, with a sprinkling of innovation and a chunk of failure mixed up into a forgettable story, with some fun but ultimately limited gameplay. You'll enjoy it whilst it lasts and if new to this type of game the length it lasts will extend quite a way, but it could have been more had it kept in mind what was proven to work and added to that, rather than taking some of those bits and pieces and building from that foundation.

If you missed it the first time around, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is well worth picking up. It plays beautifully, has a great story, and will introduce you to a world you never knew you wanted to explore. There's also no doubting that it's better than the original release. It has been improved in many ways; the graphics, presentation and gameplay have been tweaked and there is some additional content, even if not a great deal. It's just a shame that it hasn't been improved enough to make it feel at home on the new generation of consoles. It's a superb game, but not one worth upgrading your hardware for.

9 / 10.0 - Wasteland 2
Nov 3, 2014

There are between fifty and seventy hours of gameplay in Wasteland 2 for those willing to invest in its world, explore each new area fully and complete each available mission. That we were happy to do just that is testament to the brilliant design, engaging storyline and immersive combat of inXile's world. Brian Fargo and his team have excelled here, and it leaves us with one remaining question - if Wasteland 2 is this good, what can we look forward to with the forthcoming Torment: Tides of Numenara?

As ever with a Football Manager game there has been a whole host of changes some of which are apparent straight away, whilst others become clear over time. The time-honoured tradition is to incite revolution in some areas and optimising others via evolution. Whilst this ensures there's enough new stuff to get owners of older versions to buy the latest release, it does mean that nothing is ever made perfect because of the modular, but cyclic change. It's not like everything that needs to be improved is touched in one go; nor do we get that brand-new and surprising title. So here we don't get that ten out of ten rating but Sports Interactive deserve praise for again delivering the best football management simulation around. It's the same as last year then, only different.

8 / 10.0 - Alien: Isolation
Oct 30, 2014

Wrapped in the grainy trappings of detail-perfect environments, Creative Assembly have done devout fans proud, managing to create a game that fits the right tone. It's a love letter for the fans - one so delicately written that it's fun to imagine what the studio would do with other films.

Yes there is high cost to entry and an even higher one should you wish to experience everything on the disc but once you are on board what you will find is a very well crafted, fun, good looking experience which strikes the perfect balance between young, old, experienced and casual gamers alike. Arguably the best entry in a franchise which shows no signs of withering.

8 / 10.0 - Shadow Warrior
Oct 28, 2014

Shadow Warrior's fun factor is off the charts, its swordplay is entertaining and the game's story explores so much more than you might think at first glance. Repetitive level design and technical issues do hinder the experience somewhat and make the later levels a bit of a drag, but then Lo Wang and Hoji will crack a joke and everything is almost forgiven. If you're looking for humor and a bucket load of fun in this busy gaming period, then look no further than Shadow Warrior.

7 / 10.0 - Sunset Overdrive
Oct 27, 2014

Sunset Overdrive is solid if underwhelming romp in parts which admirably sets out to poke fun at itself, along with the genre, and inject some joy into proceedings. At times it does, too often it doesn't and it ultimately comes off as a mix of Jak and Daxter along with Tony Hawk minus a lot of the tight gameplay that made those successful. It's really not a system seller, making the Sunset console an oddity but it is a solid open world franchise template which will hopefully improve if we see a sequel in time. Decent but not quite as much fun as it should be.

It feels like it's playing things a little safe and is here just to reacquaint us with the world(s), with minimal progression and a lot of scene setting. Your enjoyment will really depend on how invested you already are. But this is just a beginning, for both the series and for the characters and story within. New directions are being taken and you can be damn sure we want to stick around for the ride.

6 / 10.0 - The Evil Within
Oct 21, 2014

The best thing to say about The Evil Within is that it is a good survival game with some decent mechanics, the worst thing I can say is that it is a poor horror game that doesn't live up to its design or the talent of the director. I'm not angry, I'm just very disappointed I'm not scared.

9 / 10.0 - Forza Horizon 2
Oct 16, 2014

Forza Horizon 2 is simply a joy to play - combining the gorgeous graphics, authentic but forgiving car handling, a wealth of single player content along with some fantastic social features. The the Xbox One does appear to have its first killer app.

This latest puzzling offering is more than elementary then, we'd say. Multiple cases presented well (ignoring the loading issues) all with a variety of possible outcomes which can be achieved using various tools and the power of your own deduction. You do get to feel like Holmes if we're honest; searching for the evidence, logical reasoning and grand espousing - it's very Conan Doyle. The fact it can all be played in bursts or short sessions given we're looking at discrete cases, and the way the game gives feedback on your choices compared to the reality of the situation - and compared to other gamers - adds to the experience the same way similar feedback does in many interactive novel games around at the moment. Ultimately Sherlock's alright - not much more, but alright might be all you need in the quiet autumn evenings.

Disney Infinity 2.0 is lacking in content, even after you have paid out in excess of ~120 for all the available playsets, and sadly what content there is is bland, repetitive and generally uninspiring. The toy box is the package's saving grace, offering a Minecraft like experience chock full of your Disney favourites. Kids will nag their parents to buy it and the figures themselves are really well made collectibles, it's just a shame that if dad grabs the pad for some split screen co-op he's going to be highly annoyed at the value for money the package represents. Fun, but far too brief and as a result very expensive.

In many ways Danganronpa 2 provides more of the same ' but what wonderful same it is. The central tenets of the game return again, and the quality inherent there remains. It's a great story from start to finish, and between the two games Danganronpa has moved on from its roots and the PSP and established itself as an impressive Vita franchise. The fact that some of the newer mechanics don't quite gel take a little of the shine off, but the moves are all generally positive. If Spike Chunsoft keep this up then perhaps Monokuma may find himself adopted as a most unlikely PlayStation mascot...

7 / 10.0 - Destiny
Oct 7, 2014

It doesn't quite shed the feeling of being an unfinished game though. If Destiny is meant to be this multi-year, multi-game shared-world experience is this it and will we just get more of it? If so it's good but it's not genre-defining. What genre is it trying to define actually? What have Bungie got still to come and how will that change things for better or for worse? It doesn't really matter in the here and now; this is the game we have to play. But the fact it shows promise and pain both at times throughout its life, as well as making us question if this is it or what more there will be, doesn't really garner it with glory. If you go into it knowing what you have today and that in the future something might - or might not change - then you'll be left with an enjoyable and long-lasting experience. If you expect the future that might be now - if you have bought into Bungie and Activision's chatter as being the day one solution, well, with that your joy will be muted.

9 / 10.0 - FIFA 15
Oct 5, 2014

EA have struck pure gold with Fifa 15, the series is back where it needs to be following the few setbacks of Fifa 14, and this year's additions have taken it to a whole new level. The improved Premier League experience and commentary gives the player a real sense of purpose and occasion as they soak up the atmosphere from the fans, and then the teams take to the pitch where Fifa 15's new dribbling system can be enjoyed to its fullest. We hope that EA brings a little customisation to the new tactics and an improved defence system with next year's iteration, but these are only minor flaws in what is an utterly fantastic game. If you like Football, you must play Fifa 15.

7 / 10.0 - Heavy Bullets
Oct 2, 2014

For gamers seeking a slice of arcade-style action, they could certainly do a lot worse than Heavy Bullets. The gameplay is fun, the aesthetics are first-class, and for people who love a challenge, it will certainly provide them with one. The difficulty is really what provides it with any duration, though; were it not for the constant need to start again from the beginning, you could probably complete it in an hour or two. It's certainly a good game, but it needs more content ' in a lot of different ways ' to be considered exceptional.
