Twinfinite's Reviews

Jan 7, 2014

Perhaps it's the warped, half-meaningless dialogue or the impending sense of your inability to change your fate; maybe it's the way levels shift around each time you play, or the variety of strange quests you're set upon without much direction; it could even just be the fleeting glimpse of possibility, cradled underneath this game's cloak of philosophy and confounding introspection, but I can say that I honestly enjoyed my journey here, and while I wouldn't say it's going to be everyone's cup of tea, anyone who's enjoyed the experimental indie games that seep into the market of late owes themselves at least a passing glance at this one.

5 / 5.0 - CastleStorm

Yes, I know what you're thinking. Finally, you can destroy your friends with a castle expertly shaped like a penis.

3 / 5.0 - Violett
Dec 30, 2013

Violett is priced at $9.99 on Steam, which is exactly what a game like this should cost. It's also on sale for 30% off over the holidays, and includes the lovely soundtrack with a purchase; a pretty solid deal. This game has some challenging puzzles, as well as a trippy world that is worth checking out if you are into adventure games. It's certainly a capable title with admittedly only a few issues, although the problems that do occur stand pretty firmly in the way of finding it truly enjoyable.

I myself am not one profoundly familiar with Assassin's Creed, and this is the first title I've truly sat down with and completed. That said, I find Black Flag to be an excellent entry point for new fans of the series.

3 / 5.0 - Wooden Sen'SeY
Dec 22, 2013

In the end, I suppose that is the main disappointment of Wooden Sen'SeY. It wants so badly to be a classically minded platformer that champions difficulty and challenge, but it gets there the wrong way. Instead of constructing a curve that constantly challenges the player, by making a few fatal mistakes Upper Byte has crafted a promising but ultimately disappointing imitation of those classic experiences.

3 / 5.0 - SteamWorld Dig
Dec 18, 2013

Overall, Steamworld Dig is a good game. Good, and that's all. Definitely not for everyone; good for a few hours of enjoyment, yet alas easily forgettable.

Upon reflection of what transpired in All That Remains, I'm feeling equal parts eagerness and dread with the continuation of Clementine's journey. The dread comes from knowing that things have started off pretty rough for her, and I don't anticipate them getting any better.

3 / 5.0 - Gravity Badgers
Dec 17, 2013

I desperately wanted Gravity Badgers to stand out as much as its title suggested, but it never really reaches takeoff. After ten minutes of play it's easy to feel like you're throwing badgers around without really thinking or caring any more; it simply doesn't put its own quirkiness to good use. Not a terrible cheap addition to your phone or Steam games list, but undoubtedly a missed opportunity.

4 / 5.0 - Samurai Gunn
Dec 16, 2013

Samurai Gunn is surprisingly deep and a lot of strategy is mixed in with twitch reflexes, much like a sophisticated fighting game. However, the lack of game modes, serious decrease in enjoyment as a solo game, and some technical issues hold back this otherwise immensely fun game. If you can grab a couple friends and get controllers working, Samurai Gunn can make for an enjoyable night.

4 / 5.0 - Race The Sun
Dec 15, 2013

One of the greatest things about Race the Sun, though, is that in the midst of this, there's variance and additional power-ups and other things that simply make the experience one worth repeating. Nothing captures this quite as much, though, as one fantastic vicissitude: every 24 hours, the game world is completely rearranged. While the real impact is minimal, the functional impact is phenomenal; any progress you'd made on memorizing where to go, which paths to take? It lasts less than a day.

3 / 5.0 - Tiny Brains
Dec 13, 2013

Tiny Brains is well-designed and uses four mechanics for combat, puzzle solving and tower defense, which is a commendable feat. The writing is sharp, and the aesthetics may not be the best next-gen showcase, but are gorgeous. The game gets the majority of everything it tries undoubtedly right, but somehow is forgettable in the sea of other games that came out this year, and I can only attribute that to its reliance on "thinking with portals".

All in all, Call of Duty: Ghosts is a fun experience, if not a memorable one. Graphics are incredible on Playstation 4, and online multiplayer is smooth and accessible, carrying over some of the better aspects of the previous entries.

4 / 5.0 - The Novelist
Dec 11, 2013

I'd easily recommend it for anyone interested in thoughtful, emotionally-driven story — though, its focus on this is likely a detractor for many more "traditional" gamers.

Adventure Time honestly deserves a better game than this, and WayForward can certainly do much better.  Even the soundtrack by WayForward mainstay composer Jake "Virt" Kaufman is very barebones here at best.

5 / 5.0 - Edge
Dec 9, 2013

Since its debut on iOS, Edge has remained a solid, challenging, and toe-tapping platformer that is still well worth checking out, whether its on the Wii-U eShop, Steam, or for mobile devices. Plus, you get to be a sweet disco cube in space.

Forza Motorsport 5 keeps the series in the seat of the best racing simulator out there, even though there are still some small details that I feel Turn 10 is missing. Fortunately, most of those details are just visual and don't detract from the fun of driving fast cars down a winding road.

Slender: The Arrival pulls this nonsense time again, it wants to give new life to the fiction but it can't resist showing off the goods. It delivers a variety of levels and even a new enemy, but there's no subtlety, no faith in Hitchcock's old adage: 'There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.' Some say Slender: The Arrival is just regurgitating what The Eight Pages had. This is partly true, but it's also forgotten that in horror, less is more.

As it stands, Killzone's foray into the next generation with Killzone: Shadow Fall is a good one. Though the game is held back by a lackluster story and certain missing features, it does deliver a fun experience and it is the only first-person shooter of its kind currently on the PlayStation 4.

4 / 5.0 - FIFA 14
Nov 26, 2013

Its few flaws aside, FIFA 14 is a great game and an even better soccer simulator. The improved EA Sports Ignite physics engine makes a world of difference, and allows for a very realistic and enjoyable experience that all types of gamers can find some enjoyment in.
