3 / 5.0 - Blackguards
Nov 25, 2013

While the game is still currently in development, there is more than enough time for the developers to tweak the mechanics and make this a wonderful title that I would gladly recommend to fantasy and strategy fans, but right now, this just doesn't cut it. Hopefully, Blackguards won't remain as a sea of untapped potential. It feels like trying to eat delicious soup with just a fork; it's going to take too long, and there are just no spoons anywhere.

Knytt Underground, however, fails to give that reason to keep playing. If you're looking for stylish games that simply exude an air of mystery and darkness, then this game might be exactly what many players are looking for. But if you need some substance to back up all that style, then this game might not be as tightly knit as it needs to be.

At its core, Ryse is beautiful, flawed, but still enjoyable. Xbox One owners should definitely give Ryse a chance. Eventually. Maybe just not now, nor at its current price tag.

4 / 5.0 - Risk of Rain
Nov 22, 2013

Risk of Rain is a fantastically deep roguelike that excels at offering you opportunities for success but only if you're willing to take them for yourself. It's really amazing how balanced this game feels despite its difficulty. And did I mention the soundtrack? Gorgeous ambient-techno makes this game more akin to Metroid Prime crossed with Binding of Isaac and if that doesn't sound like the best thing ever, I don't know what else to tell you.

Honestly though, nothing about this game was bad. For fans of camp you'll find something to enjoy here as you would a B-Movie. However there's nothing here I can recommend that I wouldn't be able to recommend something better instead.

5 / 5.0 - Resogun

This little shoot 'em up has easily worked its way onto the list of my favorite games for this year.

3 / 5.0 - Nihilumbra
Nov 19, 2013

My biggest takeaway from Nihilumbra is that it's a solid iOS port of a puzzle-platformer that looks and sounds good and has a fun world manipulation mechanic. On the gameplay side of things, the only real issue with it is that its early sections are hampered by a lack of challenge and variety. Where Nihilumbra falls flat is with its relentless demand on hammering home every single plot beat while you're playing. What this all results in is a game that is pretty clever, but not half as clever as it seems to think it is.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing solo as well as with my wife and son, and I'd say this is a must-get game if you've got a Wii U — and, quite possibly, a reason to think about getting one if you don't, even amid the frenzy of other next-gen consoles breaking into the market.

Burial at Sea Part I: great fan service, but not quite a 'must'.

I know that Baldur's Gate 2 is an incredibly well-loved game. I get that. I love the original X-Com, but I understand that if some walked into that these days (even an updated version that was cleaned up) it would be very hard to enjoy. This is more of a warning to people that have no experience with Baldur's Gate 2. If you have not played this before, perhaps you should check out the first one. Maybe importing a character and knowing the rules and world a bit would have alleviated many of my frustrations, but as it stands, I don't see the appeal.

Overall, though, the mechanic works great, and fits well with the quirky fun of the game itself. This was a pretty unique and interesting title, and I may find myself playing through again later just to see how it holds up once you know the solutions.

I can't wait for the inevitable sequel to see how they top this one.
