4.5 / 5.0 - Polybius
Dec 31, 2018

Polybius looks like a frenetic shooter that constantly has the player in a state of heightened tension, but the truly amazing thing about it is that it's almost the complete opposite in actual play.

Battle Princess Madelyn is clearly an homage to Capcom titles about slaying ghouls, ghosts and goblins but presented in an endearing, story within a story fashion.

3.5 / 5.0 - BELOW
Dec 21, 2018

After five years of waiting, though there are some frequently fantastic examples of sound used to further the tone and aesthetic, a similarly plentiful amount of contradictory design choices and unnecessarily tasking moments leaves BELOW with many rough edges.

Minotaur Arcade Volume 1 is a great little bundle of two games that deserved better than to be lost to an obsolete mobile phone OS.  While Gridrunner is clearly the star of the show, Goat Up is a fun little oddball that also has the distinction of being Llamasoft's first platformer.

3.5 / 5.0 - Scintillatron 4096
Dec 19, 2018

You need to come up with a strategy on the fly and then stick with it, carrying it off to perfection to earn a decent score. That’s Scintillatron 4096’s biggest strength and harshest weakness, because there’s no recovering a level from a single mistake.

2.5 / 5.0 - Desert Child
Dec 11, 2018

Though its pixellated visuals and bright environments do provide brief pleasantries in the first hour or so, the little variety in its missions and very reason to stay invested other than grinding until the climax results in a game caught between two minds, committing, sadly, to neither one in the process.

3 / 5.0 - Crimson Keep
Dec 5, 2018

Despite its issues I kept on plugging away at Crimson Keep, not just to review it, but because it feels like if I can just figure out how to work around its shortcomings there's a great dungeon crawl waiting to be found.

2.5 / 5.0 - Fallout 76
Nov 27, 2018

Fallout 76 strives to be both a single player experience and online multiplayer game, and due to the concessions it makes to achieve this, ends up falling short in both objectives.
