10 / 10.0 - Child of Light
Apr 28, 2014

The visuals, the gameplay, the music, the story, and everything else — when all of these elements come together perfectly and form a true world. A world that takes no effort to get lost in, a world that takes you far away. Individual parts of a game are huge, to be sure, but it is a world that we as gamers truly crave, a world that takes us to an experience beyond anything we previously could have imagined.

The launch of a three-dimensional Mario platformer on a console always carries huge expectations with it.  Ever since Super Mario 64 redefined 3D gaming and single-handedly sold countless people on the Nintendo 64, each 3D Mario game is expected to somehow match its impact.  Well, that's physically impossible — literally, we'd have to make a 4D game to recreate it — and we need to accept that.

10 / 10.0 - Bayonetta 2
Oct 30, 2014

Overall I cannot recommend Bayonetta 2 enough, this is a game that every Nintendo Enthusiast and gamer should have in their collection. This game is a technical achievement in game design and has the pacing of classic video games that have defined a generation such as Ocarina of Time and Resident Evil 4. Bayonetta looks great, sounds great, and plays great; the game is not half bad too. Without a doubt, this is the greatest action game of all time.

Breath of the Wild reinvents the Zelda formula by taking many of the best elements of past games and combining them perfectly with the modern open world game. In doing so, Nintendo doesn't merely update its classic series, but brings it to fantastic new heights, setting a new standard for open world game design that will be hard to match.

At the end of the day, we give Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate our highest recommendation based on our experience, which has been thoroughly outstanding in the short time we\'ve played it. Will it be for you? Who knows, it\'s a niche game if we\'ve ever seen one. But it\'s living proof that niche games can be masterpieces when they are unapologetically designed and crafted around their core gameplay, with little regard for attracting others games\' audience.

Super Mario Odyssey is the best game available on Nintendo Switch, and just might be my favorite game of the year. It isn't just a masterclass of level and sound design, it's a celebration of the Super Mario franchise, and one of helluva celebration to take part in.

A work of art that I can’t recommend enough.

I can't recommend What Remains of Edith Finch enough if anyone has yet to play it. With so many incredible games that are currently coming to Switch, it's important to support the special titles coming from publisher Annapurna Interactive. Its explorations of loss and tragedy left me emotional on numerous occasions, yet it also holds an uplifting and edifying emotional core. This experience remains undiminished thanks to a comprehensive port that doesn't make any drastic sacrifices to the performance and visuals. As far as I'm concerned, it's required reading for those passionate about storytelling in video games.

9.5 / 10.0 - Shovel Knight
Jun 26, 2014

It seems like forever ago since I first heard of Shovel Knight and with the continuous delays, the wait was never an easy one. It\'s no secret that I\'m a massive fan for old school Mega Man, so when Shovel Knight was classified as a "melee-focused Mega Man," it instantly became my most anticipated game. I purposefully ignored all of the trailers and previews, so I could go in blind and complete the nostalgia, pretending I just picked this game up off a store shelf without knowing much about it. It\'s rare that a game can live up to the hype and rarer still when a game surpasses it. I had no idea that Shovel Knight was going to be as good as it turned out.

Besides the personal preference on the story telling comic-book style, the only real concern with the game is that there is a heavy emphasis on trial and error, which could turn those less patient off. However, those with even just a little bit of patience are advised to pick up Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones. With tons of content, top-notch graphics and audio, and pin point controls, Stealth Inc. 2 is an easy consideration for one of the best eShop games of 2014. Couple that with amazing local co-op that uses the GamePad in an excellent manner, and you have possibly one of the best overall Wii U games of 2014.

It's impossible not to be impressed with the second round of DLC: in every way, it either lives up to or even surpasses even the original game, gives tons of content, and does so all while expanding the possibilities of Mario Kart for the future. And it is just eight dollars; less than that if you got the combo pack. Truly, this is a phenomenal example of what DLC should be, and it brings Mario Kart 8 to ever increasing heights.

All-in-all, Mario Kart 8's first DLC pack is utterly remarkable. Not only is the track design better than ever, not only do they add new characters and karts, and not only does it live up to the visual and online standards of the main game – it even expands the possibilities of what Mario Kart can be.

[I]t creates an incredible, breathtaking, awe-inspiring world that is an absolute joy to run around in, to fight in, to collect in, to look around in, to be in. It may not have done so flawlessly, but Xenoblade Chronicles X gave me one of the finest worlds gaming has to offer, and it populated that world with incredible things to do. You have the option to be a part of that world as well. And while you should not expect perfection or anything near it, I can say with absolute certainty that you should play Xenoblade Chronicles X.

9.5 / 10.0 - Runbow
Aug 26, 2015

Overall, Runbow is easily one of the best indie titles currently available on the Wii U, and the single best local multiplayer game I have played on the console. What really sets Runbow apart though isn't just its multiplayer gameplay, but its plethora of modes, innovative level design, charm, and overall gaming excellence.

At its core, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is just as good as the original release. Those that missed out on the chance to play through the Wii version will love the incredible world of Xenoblade, the masterfully told story, and the engaging combat system.
