Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is overall a great idea, wrapped up in a mundane game. It has its moments when it all "clicks", but they're only moments. Being multiplayer-focused (when the game is begging for an epic SP campaign) the game has a large dependence of its online community - that is already dwindling on some servers - and lacklustre content (though varied), makes it a game that is hard to recommend, and non-compelling to go back to. Though the PC version looks more entertaining at the least with its modding capabilities.
Echoes of Aetheria does what any good story driven role playing game should do; it tells an epic fantasy story with an array of characters from different backgrounds, and features a deep and engaging battle system. Though, the games narrative lacks any real innovation and is full of tropes typical of JRPG games of yesteryear, it's still a fun 15 hour adventure worth playing through.
Squirbs may not be the brightest or most polished platformer out there, but it's still a lot of fun to play. Figuring out the solution to each devious stage is a blast, and once you complete even a single one, you'll undoubtedly have a smile on your face
Temple of Yog presents itself as an interesting roguelike title, promising a progression of characters, while enhancing a civilisation through the gameplay. A number of features are worth looking at, but the game in general could have done with more time in development. If the problems are fixed, and more variety added, it has the potential to be a great addition to the Wii U library.
Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures is a 2D platformer with a retro game style. The title tries really hard to capture the difficulty of old NES games, as well as the character of the Angry Video Game Nerd. While the graphics, music, and controls are all fantastic, it falls a little short in the level design, story, and humour.
Zombie Vikings is a solid brawler but it's a game that's more style over substance. The amusingly over the top plot can is good fun and while playing single player it can be key to pulling you through some of the repetition. The lack of variety and frustrating little glitches unfortunately give the game an unfinished feel but with a good group of friends it can still be good for a laugh.
Human Resource Machine is very clever little puzzle game. Coding enthusiasts may find the odd challenge but more likely to breeze through the games 38 puzzles in quick succession. Beginners on the other hand may find themselves bamboozled and frustrated by a lot of the tasks asked of them but it will certainly be an eye opener for some to the complex world of programming.
Shantae: Risky's Revenge – Director's Cut is an overall solid game with charming gameplay and wonderful presentation values. It's hindered by its somewhat repetitive design, cumbersome map system and lack of innovation or surprises, but it still manages to offer a good time for anyone looking to delve into the newest Metroidvania release.
Polarized ending may split some players with some saying the endings offer a satisfying conclusion to this teen sci-fi drama while others may find it a somewhat underwhelming climax to what has been a great series. The ending aside, this has been another very well written chapter, as the tension continued to rise throughout and as for the character development it was again on top form rewarding players with some very moving moments.
After the shocking conclusion of Chaos Theory, Life is Strange Dark Room ups the ante once more and continues on it path of out of the blue surprises. Taking a darker and at times almost gruesome turn, episode 4 offers not only the longest story of the four but the best in the series so far. Character development reaches a new emotional level of depth and the gameplay has developed further again to gain a sense of challenge.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is an RPG that has players exploring the beautiful world of Mira, while helping the human race to survive on their new homeland. The story is slow to get going, but the game is packed full of side-quests and missions, meaning players will always find something to do. Meanwhile, the combat has an impressive amount of customisation, with a choice of weapons, skills, and classes, that allows the player to create fighting style tactics to suit their preferred play style.
Just Cause 3 is a great game to blast around in, due to the amount of fun, unrealistic antics the player can get up to. But constant technical issues - although most commonly just drops in frame rates during heavy-effect scenes - bullet-sponge AI, and repetitive missions, make the game a bit of a drag to play for long sessions. However those 1-5 hour stints when you get the time? Just a bundle of mad chaos, explosions, and genuine fun (though lightly sprinkled with small annoyances). Why do I like blowing up stuff so much? Just Cause..
Hard West is a strategy game that enjoys exploring its Wild West theme. There are strategy elements both in the RPG story segments, as well as the turn-based combat, which keeps the player invested. Unfortunately, too much time is spent outside of the gun-fights, and the RPG elements quickly get repetitive, meaning they end up being more filler than fun.
Sword Art Online: Lost Song of course won't appeal to everyone, fans on the other hand are sure to enjoy another outing with the likable SAO cast. The sidequests lack quite a bit of depth and the unique flight mechanic makes for enjoyable way to explorbut takes a lot of time to get used to. Give it enough time though and you'll find a fun and addictive RPG.
PONCHO is a 2D side scrolling puzzle platform game by Delve Interactive, which combines a clever gameplay mechanic with detailed and beautifully rendered pixel art. The game uses both back and foreground layers to create complex puzzling challenges and platforming. The results on the whole are mixed, but once the player adjusts to timing the command to zap between layers whilst jumping, there are some moments of entertaining gameplay.
Freedom Planet is a fantastic fast platformer with lots of content. The three different playable characters all have different styles and levels, encouraging replayability, while the levels themselves include multiple pathways and hidden collectables. Any negatives are small, and easily forgotten about.
Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is a very well constructed, and beautifully made RPG. It isn't for the faint hearted; knowledge of how RPG's work, and a lot of time, is needed to understand and get to grips with the game. While being challenging, it offers plenty of action to those who wish to immerse themselves in a rich and quest filled world.
Atmospherically, ROOT does deliver the sort of intriguing digital dystopia so woefully underused as a genre for modern video games. Unfortunately, problems with some of the gameplay systems and AI spoil the experience and never quite allow the game to live up to its potential.
Easily one of the most anticipated games of this year, Fallout 4 doesn't disappoint. Along with the main mission there are hundreds of side quests and other things to get up to on your travels through the wasteland, and it is easy to get sucked in. There are some bugs and glitches which make it frustrating at times, but overall it is an engrossing and really enjoyable play.
Mushihimesama may be on the short size with only five levels, but packs in a range of difficulty modes to make up for it. It is a fun game, which makes players feel over-powered while attempting to dodge beautiful and well-designed bullet patterns.
