Beyond a few quirks though, Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War is an excellent 4x game set in a dark and gritty universe. In time I hope that we see the additional races, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tyranids, and my personal favorite, Tau, as only 4 playable races does make the game feel a bit empty at times. That said, what is there within the four playable races equates to a solid turn-based strategy game that, Emperor take me, is an excellent Warhammer 40k title. Gladius - Relics of War is 2018's Warhammer Must-have.
Salt and Sanctuary for the Switch is a great port. Everything is smooth and it works just as I had expected it to be. There are no slowdowns, the graphics look just as good, the audio is just as chilling as ever, and the adventure is still an awesome one to be had. If you haven't already had the chance to dive into this comber, and woeful tale, you should. It's worth it.
Overall The Council, Episode 3: Ripples is a great continuation to an already great series. With plenty of directions to go and ways to customize your skills, there’s more than one way to go through this series and you’ll need in order to see all variations of paths that you could have taken up to this point as we now wait for the next episode before finally being able to dive into the finale.
At this point in time, City of the Shroud is a fantastic experience. With great storytelling, an amazing combat system and the ability to set your party up as you see fit, there’s more than enough to keep you going with the current single player components to get you started and the multiplayer components to test your mettle against other players.
Sleep Tight is a fun experience and a great take on childhood nightmares. I wish I could have been this armed when I was growing up. With fast paced action and great music, I do wish that it had different modes, the ability to start further up or to adjust the difficulty more than by simply switching the characters. I’m hoping for a multiplayer component down the line because either coop or versus to see who does better / lives longer would be amazing!
Mary Skelter: Nightmares is definitely one of my favorite dungeon crawlers, whether it be characters, music, battle system, or tone/theme, I just had so much fun playing it the entire way through. With some seriously messed up looking bosses, handy warp points, and Hameln, Mary Skelter just had so much I enjoyed. I can tell you for certain that I'm eagerly anticipating the sequel that's been announced, and I hope you'll enjoy this game as much as I did.
To be perfectly honest, Scarlet Curiosity may not really appeal to you if you aren’t a big Touhou fan like I am, but on the plus side, it also isn’t the cost of a full game either, so if you get it on sale, you probably won’t feel too let down if you don’t end up enjoying it. Despite the occasional frame rate drop here and there, which I attribute to my old computer, Scarlet Curiosity actually ran smoother than I expected, and the control set-up felt really natural to play on a keyboard. As far as Touhou fan games go, Scarlet Curiosity is pretty looking and sounding, and while not as long or in-depth as a standard game, is also simple enough to pick up or ease back into, and low cost enough to at least give it a chance. So get ready to head into Gensokyō to help a vampire and her best meido out!
If you are a fan of retro-styled JRPG titles, Cosmic Star Heroine provides a nice dose of nostalgic science fiction to enjoy. The visuals are better than the sound, but the overall presentation is comfortable and enjoyable, ably assisted by a deeper-than-expected combat system. There is not a ton of content here nor replay value in the roughly dozen hours it takes to see Alyssa's adventure through to the end, but it is definitely a worthwhile adventure while it lasts.
Warhammer 40k - Martyr: Inquisitor has a lot of great ideas and is easy to sink hours upon hours into but there are still some areas that felt rough. The title itself however hasn’t just been left to its own devices and I want to give the developers huge props for the work that they are putting into it, the events that they have ongoing and the general work that keep putting into it. Like The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, NecoreGames pay attention and work towards making the best product they can with feedback from the fans. Should you check it out? Yes. There’s plenty to do and a lot of “Hack & Slash” Action RPG adventuring to be had.
As far as I can tell, the game is deterministic, and if you play correctly, when you learn what playing correctly even IS, then you shall succeed and ascend to your rightful place.
Fans of Mega Man X, 20XX is for you. It’s everything that you’ve probably wanted since the last release fourteen years ago back in 2004. It’s fun, it’s well built and even more, it’s designed for even those that only have time for a stage or two before having to run out the door with a quick save option. The only downside? There’s no real story. That’s it. 20XX is all the classic gameplay with modern accuracy and responsiveness that you need for both your platforming needs and the void that Capcom have left since the last release of the Mega Man X series.
Red Faction Guerrilla Re-mars-tered isn’t a bad title but certain aspects show their age and the lack of refinement from the original release. That’s not to say that it’s not a hell of a lot of fun to take on the EDF in any way you see fit, it’s just that the controls can often get in the way of a really enjoyable time.
Overall, I’d say Hakoniwa Explorer Plus is a quirky little adventure game with a lot of interesting gags, a solid base mechanic, although it may need some slight tweaking, and enough big boobed/butted large bosses to easily identify the improbably female boss cast. While there are a lot of aspects that need a little touching up, such as the supped speedy rate at which your weapons deteriorate, the gags, simple gameplay, and school swimsuits will probably have you coming back for more.
Although the levels and tasks can be quite repetitive, I didn’t find that it was detrimental to my level of entertainment. I tried to be super colorful with my painting, which led to higher scores when finishing a block. If it wasn’t for the lack of autosave at each checkpoint and the wonky jump mechanics, I likely would have score this game a lot higher. The multiplayer is definitely its redeeming element.
Ancestor's Legacy is without a doubt one of 2018's gems; fantastic characters, a unique and absolutely brilliant camera that allows you to get up-close and personal with the action on the ground, an interesting story, a gorgeous world, and wonderfully tactical real-time combat are packaged up into a must-have experience. With a bit here for RTS fans and a bit here for RPG fans, Ancestor's Legacy really is a title that any gamer can pick up and play, though they will be punished for their mistakes. Whether you choose the screaming Vikings or the straight-backed Germans, you are in for a surprisingly deep and incredibly intricate real-time experience.
This is the dragon's curse remake that we SHOULD have gotten, in lieu of the flash-graphic-esque monstrosity that we were served. I highly recommend this game to everyone that likes the style.
While most of us would be content with four walls and a roof, what if you were trapped inside six walls with a hatch that only led to another box with six walls? While the former lends to a sense of peace and protection the other creates a prison and when one set continuously leads to another it imbues a sense of dread and despair as you feel like you've never get out.
Mars or Die! is a neat and small adventure. In control of your pair of would be conquerors, how you go about completing your objectives is in your hands. You can do them as fast or as slow as you want choosing to ignore the bonus objectives if they don’t suit you. The controls are smooth with a controller, the graphics are well done and the writing that comes about as your instructions from your supreme ruler are hilarious as he clearly thinks he owns everything. Will you conquer Mars? Or will you die?
Shining Resonance Refrain is a title that should appease Shining and general JRPG fans, as it does a lot of things found in other games, and does them pretty well. The art style is cute, if the overall environments are a bit lacking visually, but couple with a solid audio presentation to create an enjoyable overall package. There is a lot to do here, though those turned off by grinding might not find the various systems interesting enough to spend oodles of time roaming and killing random critters encountered along the way. Personally I hope this is a sign of things to come, and we might see more Shining titles in the future - perhaps another strategy game please?
I quite enjoyed Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded. It has many of those classic elements that make a Roguelike what they are alongside other factors that made it enjoyable as you aren’t always making hard choices as to whether or not to pick something up because you are out of space. Being able to grind it down for points and then use those points on something else makes for a fantastic feature as you aren’t stuck waiting for a blacksmith but you can do it yourself keeping the dungeon crawling rolling for a lot longer at a time.
