Nine Parchments is a game I've been looking forward to playing since it was announced by Fronzebyte, and I have to say that the wait has been worth it. I've been a fan of the Trine series, and enjoy playing Has Been Heroes on Switch (even more so after the massive recent update to that game!), and I'm happy to say that Nine Parchments is a solid and fun single-player/co-op release
My conclusion on the game is that despite the bugs and issues mentioned above, when everything comes together, it plays fairly well and is enjoyable for the first few hours or so. The title gets dry real quick, however, unless you have other people to play with. Points for improvement would be the inclusion of a tutorial at the start and maybe adding a new game mode or two to keep things interesting. The team at MunkyFun has said it is looking into bringing online play into League of War: VR Arena, so you know they are indeed listening to their player base!
Serial Cleaner is a very fun and addictive game that will keep you hooked until the end. The gameplay mechanics are simple and to the point, and the premise is so crazy it just works. Cleaning up murder scenes for the mob, down to the last drop of blood? Weird! Serial Cleaner is a great option on PS4 and one you should definitely check out.
Morphite is an interesting procedurally-generated release that you're either going to love or hate.
Spintires: MudRunners was an interesting surprise for me. At first, I thought I was getting a racing title, but I quickly saw that wasn't the case – it morphed into an experience I have never had before! It was difficult, but in a good way, and really challenged the way I play games with vehicles, as it's not just about going fast, but about getting things done right.
8-bit Adventure Anthology: Volume I is a strong collection of some great classic games that will really make fans of them very happy to play such faithful ports. That being said, this isn't going to bring new players on board with what some might consider “dated looks,” the not ideal controls, and the considerable difficulty curve. If you love adventure games, then you're going to love this one. I can't wait to see what Volume 2 has in store for us!
Blue Wizard Digital has done a great job with Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut. The game's graphics are colorful and charming in this gory killing adventure, and the music is brilliant with a mix of creepy music with some solid rock tunes which perfectly fits the game's atmosphere. The game even includes a Platinum trophy that isn't hard to get and that should take you roughly 6-8 hours or so at most.
Pixel Heroes: Byte and Magic is a fun and challenging is a fun and challenging old-school styled RPG on PlayStation 4 with a lot of quests to complete and plenty of fun to be had. Due to the game's nature, this one certainly is not for all gamers as it is aimed at a more hardcore crowd. But if you're looking for a meaty RPG that will test your skills in full, and in which when your party dies you are forced to start all over with a new group, then be sure to check out Pixel Heroes: Byte and Magic.
Violett is a fun adventure game that you should play on Nintendo Switch. The graphics alone are worth the purchase alone, since this is a very pretty and vibrant adventure with a great art style. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it certainly doesn't need to. It's a bit more linear than what you're probably used to play in this genre, but don't let that get in the way of your enjoyment! It's a short game that doesn't overstay its welcome, so you should set aside an afternoon to dive into the world of Violett!
The sound effects can be quite eerie such as footsteps that sound authentic, strange and weird noises that make you turn around and find an enemy standing behind you ready to jump your party. The music is very good and does a great job of complementing the action and the exploration. Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is a fun game that can feel a bit frustrating to those new to the genre, but if you give it a bit of time and take things slowly you'll find a very polished but hard dungeon crawler.
The The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR has brought something new to the table. It was pretty awesome to actually feel like you are part of the game, and the world of Skyrim now feels vast, varied, and like an actual genuine place thanks to the power of VR. I would have given this one a solid eight if it wasn't for the obvious issues with the game's graphics and the clunkiness of the controls, since it has all the DLC built-in from the start which is a nice bonus.
Far From Noise is a unique experience that I'm delighted to have had a chance to play, and I loved each minute of it. Its creator, George Batchelor, did an amazing job on this release that every player looking for a different, introspective experience should definitely play! Come for the game presentation, and stay for the amazing narrative!
If you have played other Artifex Mundi games, you know what you are getting yourself into for this one. If you have enjoyed the studio's games, then I think you will find the story compelling. Despite some outdated visuals and so-so voice acting, this is another good entry in the point and click adventure line from Artifex Mundi.
PSN Price (PlayStation 4): $12.99
INK is a fun platformer with an interesting gameplay mechanic that has more than enough content to justify its price. The 75 available levels offer a good challenge, not to mention that finding all 20 hidden coins will require some extra time from players looking in out of reach spots. It's a short game that can be completed in a couple of hours with an extra hour or two for trophy cleanup… or at least for most trophies since completing all 75 levels in the game without dying will require a lot of practice, but at least it counts them in groups of 25 levels and not the full 75 levels in one go.
Ace of Seafood is a weird Japanese release which has a lot of flaws, the worst being the actual gameplay and how you control things. The camera will be your worst enemy, and aiming at enemies could definitely have been way better. I'd suggest you avoid this game unless it goes on sale and you really want to try a weird game that only gets weirder as you play more and more.
Batman: The Enemy Within – The Pact ends in a cliffhanger, as is to be expected from a Telltale Games episodic release, and it will definitely leave you wanting more. Luckily the third episode for the series releases soon, so the wait won't be that long!
Hand of Fate 2 is a fun game with an interesting mix of board game/card game/action game mechanics that perfectly come together to make it all work. There is certainly a luck element thrown into the mix due to the dice and card gameplay mechanics, but in the end it makes for a very fun and dynamic gaming experience. I definitely liked what the team has done with this sequel and I look forward to seeing what they end up doing next!
Perception is an interesting psychological thriller that I definitely recommend you check out on Nintendo Switch. The unique gameplay premise of the game by which you must use sound to be able to find your way around the location mixes things up, placing you in the shoes of a blind woman who won't let her disability get in the way. Abandoned houses are creepy by nature, but exploring an abandoned house as a blind woman who literally can't see what lurks in the dark is a thrilling experience. Playing in the dark is the best way to enjoy this 3 to 4-hour release, especially if you're playing in portable mode with your headphones on!
Raiders of the Broken Planet is an ambitious and solid indie release on PlayStation 4 that does a lot of things right. MercurySteam managed to release a fun episodic game with offline and online modes while offering it at a fraction of the cost of other games. Being able to get campaigns as they release is interesting, and if you like the prologue you can dive in and get the Founder's Pack which makes it so that you get all campaigns as they release.
