Wasteland’s 3 first major DLC, “The Battle of Steeltown” elevates what, for a long time was an average CRPG to new heights. Not only provides a better narrative, but also more subtle characters, more challenging decisions and doesn’t shy itself from talking about worker rights and politics. This, accompanied by the 1.4.0 patch, makes it the best time to jump back into Wasteland 3.

Unfocused in both its plot and gameplay, We Happy Fews completely misses the mark and does a huge disservice by spreading old stigmas associated with mental health issues.

4 / 10.0 - The Valiant
Nov 17, 2022

The Valiant tries to recapture some of the charm of Company of Heroes but in a “medieval-esque” setting but it fails due to its shallow gameplay, clumsy storytelling and lack of unit variety. Questionable design decisions, such as animation tied so severely to how units behave on the battlefield only makes it worse. There are some good ideas, such as “heroes”, but sadly they are not well used within the game. For diehard strategy fans only

Even with all the beauty and event variety, Dakar Desert Rally drops the ball when it comes to the driving itself. Be it in a quad, a motorcycle or a truck, you will either lose grip very easily or get hit by the extremely aggressive AI. Not all is bad though, the simulation mode shows promise, but it would only shine after a couple of much needed patching.

Call of the Wild: The Angler has beautiful vistas, a huge map and a big variety of rods to choose from, but its mix of rather simplistic and obtuse fishing, along with some serious visual issues, turns the game from an “essential fishing game for fans” to a “wait until it gets better”. Expansive Worlds has a great track record of improving things over time, so it might be worth a look in 2023 or beyond.

With the exception of a new difficulty and some minor enhancements to its combat, Kingdoms of Amalur feels like a remaster built upon the community previous efforts on modding the original game. The biggest “improvement” you’ll see — at least on PC — is a myriad of new bugs and headaches. Stick to the original if possible.

Someday You’ll Return overreliance on guilt instead of the already established myths about the region – and frequently referenced – but also makes it a lesser, more predictable game. It’s an indie game trying to stand the shoulders of giants. But as it often happens. The “AAA” industry might provide great visuals but lacks creativity.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms always had a big issue with its convoluted interface, but XIV – instead of improving it – strips almost every aspect that made both XI, XII and XIII such gems. What is left is a soulless corpse with very few noteworthy aspects. It’s surely a good base to build upon, but not something worth playing right now.

If anything, Rise of the Cartels shows that doing turn-based games in which every unit moves in its own turn instead of the traditional team-based mode is a bad idea. Tactical battles turn into a back and forth between two or three units, it lacks depth the genre is known for.

While Stygian offers wealth in its lore and worldbuilding, it falls short with bugs, a rushed ending and very frustrating combat encounters.

Warparty still lives in the 90's, the so-called "golden era of real time strategy games", whilst ignoring the huge advances the genre made in the last 20 years. It should feel like a nice nostalgia trip, but it turns to be a game stuck in time, with little to show other than cool looking dinosaurs.

Bursting with ideas on how to revolutionize the 4X Genre, At The Gates demise lies in its poor execution, lackluster AI and what it seems to be an endless list of bugs.

Odd translation and wonky combat makes Ash of Gods not only to live in the shadow of The Banner Saga, it fails to capture what made the games developed by Stoic so amazing.

Filled with Nostalgia, Kingsway is a roguelike without the good parts. It relies far too much on its user interface to create tension instead of developing actual variety on its enemy encounters and combat systems.

Lovecraft Untold Stories 2 completely shifts its perspective and its core mechanics in comparison to its predecessor. Sadly, it’s for the worse. Poor enemy AI along with some beautiful, but busy visuals make this mix between roguelite and story a huge pass from me.
