Monkey King: Hero is Back is essentially forgettable. A sea of mediocrity with no ambition to be anything more.

A competent, if unambitious arcade racing game that puts in a solid midfield performance, but falls well short of making the podium.

I would rather swim through a pile of Kane’s sweaty undies than play another match in this game.

John Wick Hex offers up intelligent action marred by a few shortcomings. Definitely one for fans of the films to check out, as well as anyone looking for a unique-but-light strategy title.

Stygian really delivers on its Lovecraftian premise and mixing it with 1920’s style is a refreshing change The story and RPG elements are rich and immersive, but certain elements such as UI clutter, an abrupt ending and some bugs hold it back a little.

Unscored - Felix the Reaper
Oct 13, 2019

Felix the Reaper is a mildly difficult puzzler that will appeal to those who enjoy object swapping and thinking several moves ahead. It’s light, gory humour and unique art style keeps things fresh. I just wish there was more room for pushing things beyond set solutions. It feels more like following a set of instructions than forging your own path.

Concrete Genie’s biggest failing is how it had some many avenues to be ‘more’ than a good game, but never manages to fully traverse any one of them. It’s likely the best game from 2019 that you’ll have forgotten in 2020.

It has charm, polish, heart, and a whole lot of promise - Children of Morta is the child who subconsciously wants to meet everyone’s expectations, and is slightly tearing herself apart doing so.

Hiding the nasty microtransactions and adding some welcome new additions has lead to the best game of ball of this generation. It isn’t perfect, but it isn’t the monetary predator it has been for the last few years.

C - Rad
Sep 10, 2019

RAD ultimately feels far too repetitive and unrewarding to recommend to people. It has a lot of potential should Double Fine choose to add post-launch updates, but at present I'm hoping for a third Armageddon to make things more interesting.

While it starts shaky, Greedfall grows into a comforting and satisfying RPG. It may feel a bit behind the times, but the art design and original story should be given credit and it is good to see this developer releasing something that mostly delivers on its promise.

Save for Capcom not correcting the flaws with the online architecture, Monster Hunter World delivers for fans of all levels of experience. It’s a treat to behold and sets the bar even higher for whatever the franchise does next.

A or higher - Gears 5
Sep 3, 2019

Gears 5 offers, in my mind at least, the best game in the franchise yet and that is thanks to the developers feeling comfortable enough to take the game out of its usual wheelhouse. The introduction of the open maps, along with a fantastic story that is sure to make long-time fans jump with glee takes the Gears we know and love and brings it to the next level.

Man of Medan sets out to achieve two things: spin a good yarn and scare the crap out of you while it does so. Though it is riddled with glitches and controls like a bulldozer, playing with friends helps these negatives take a backseat to the thrills this game has to offer.

It may be a bit on the “no frills” side of things but don’t be fooled, MXGP 2019 offers some of the most satisfying racing available. Just don’t be put off by the initial punch in the face from the game’s difficulty.

A or higher - Control

Combing the best parts of Alan Wake and Quantum Break, Control is Remedy at the top of their game. Unique, challenging and engaging gameplay mixed with a story like no other makes this a must play for action fans everywhere.

If you missed the second game’s release, this package is well worth getting. My competitiveness has waned over the years, so I’m happy just to get through each level, but there is definitely depth on offer if you choose to knuckle down and perfect each murder box.

For better or worse Subdivision Infinity DX is a game that recreates the golden era of space-based arcade shooters beautifully. Mileage may vary, but if you have fond memories of Freespace and Rogue Squadron, this is a game for you.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a pretty rough ride that takes two steps back for every step it takes forward.

If you can look past the repetitiveness of the missions, you can play right through the story line and get yourself up to speed on the story of Attack on Titan without having to watch all of the anime, and while killing titans may get a bit old, swinging through the city and mastering the ODM never does.
