The better rhythm-guitar game is Guitar Hero Live not only because it is the better value, but also because Guitar Hero Live is advancing the genre of the guitar controlled rhythm game that went stale last generation.
Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS is a great game, and possibly the best 2D Mario available on the system. The creative mentality seems to unlock the developers from holding true to past level designs, and allows creators to toy with the varied elements of a Mario level to really create something special.
Horrifying experimentation. Death-defying leaps of faith. Buzzsaws of DEATH. These are the challenges that await you in “Splasher”, a new platformer available now on Steam from SplashTeam.
Rise & Shine is a action packed side scroller with challenging puzzles and enemies.
Hey Pikmin is a great nod to the more traditional format of these games on other consoles. While not being able to be the same type of game there is enough meat on this bone to keep players satisfied while we wait for Pikmin 4.
Hellblade is a tricky bag of thoughts and impressions. In today's environment, mental health to many is a field of landmines, having scarcely been touched in the video game industry. There have been a few landmark titles, but Hellblade really raises the bar… or should I say down since our main Celtic heroine, Senua, needs to trek the decrepit waters of the Northmen to make her perilous passage into Helheim, the Norse equivalent of the underworld.
Gameplay: This is where the game shines for me, it harkens back to the old turn based combat I used to love so much, while it doesn't always work in modern day gaming, I enjoyed Earthlock. Instead of having meters fill up to let you know when your character was getting ready to make their move there is a string of icons to the right of the screen showing who is coming up next whether it's you or the enemy which allows the players to strategize as to what needs to be done next. (should I heal now or can I make it until the next round, etc) The leveling up system allows players to customize the characters to how they want to play, focus on close or long range combat, is defense more important than attack, etc. The game does require some old-school grinding at points though in order to be a high enough level to tackle some of the bosses otherwise you will die, a lot. The only thing i didn't care for in the gameplay was the ability to help your enemies, for instance there was a few times while using my healer when trying to select the right person to heal I would accidentally heal my enemy, I know it's dumb it's my fault but just something that annoyed me. However if you heal a ghost enemy it does a large amount of damage, and if you hit a stunned ally it'll snap them out of it so it is utilized as part of the gameplay.
Do you remember waking up early on a Saturday morning? Your parents are still asleep, you stumble downstairs into the kitchen and make yourself a huge bowl of whatever sugar rush providing cereal you can find. Plunking down in front of your television set, the sand fading from your eyes, the vibrant lights of cartoon action and wacky sounds engross your attention. With each bite you fall further into the void of childhood bliss. This familiar childhood dimension is where Bleed 2 resides.
So, when this game fell into my lap, I have only seen pictures and small clips of Stick It To The Man, which the title’s namesake didn’t even make much sense until the very end. Was I about to play some hippy game where we spray paint flowers on cop cars and do peaceful protest? I know it was one of the “Steam-To-Switch” releases that have been swarming the new console (and with great success), but even at first glance, the main character threw me off. He looks like a cross between the Simpsons and Paper Mario given a burlesque touch, for goodness sakes.
Seldom does a game come around so powerful that it leaves a long-lasting impact on the player. An experience so dramatic, that is forces those who played it to reflect on their own lives in the real world, outside of the game. That Dragon, Cancer is that game. That Dragon, Cancer is a two hour-ish click adventure game that you can play on PC via Steam or iOS device around $10. That Dragon, Cancer focuses more on narrative than it does gameplay, a trend that has led many titles being dubbed as walking simulators (some positively, others not so much). That Dragon, Cancer however is one walking simulator you should play. It’s true, there is not much more to do in That Dragon, Cancer besides walking around and interacting (point & click) with objects. In the short time you’ll play the game you will encounter a curveball here and there that spices up the fun. Whether it is a kart race around a room, some interesting puzzles to crack or a side-scrolling retro platformer, there are parts in the game that add enough interaction to warrant That Dragon, Cancer classified as a video game and not just a visual novel.
A fantastic indie-exclusive that all fans of the developer, Limbo, and Xbox will enjoy. Inside is a short but compact fun-filled experience that never wastes your time. You will either love or loathe Insides ending, but the journey offers great value for a $20 dollar bill and provides an experience that will still be debatable among friends for the rest of 2016.
Worms W.M.D sets a new bar for the long-running franchise. A new engine and art-style provide an improved foundation compared to Worms Battlegrounds. The new editions of buildings & vehicles solidifies that Worms W.M.D will keep the chaos entertaining for as long as you play it.
Talent Not Included is the type of platformer we’d get if Super Meat Boy, Trine, and Super Mario 3 dripped their creative juices into a game. Set in the fantasy land of Notthatmuchfurther, our heroes are simple actors giving the performance of their lives. Literally.
Poncho, a game that a week ago, honestly I knew nothing about. It however was highlighted on Nintendo’s eshop update this week along with a trailer and it instantly hooked me. We at PSVG reached out the to the development team and they were gracious enough to supply us with a review copy of the game. I played the game on the Wii U entirely on the gamepad (just felt right) but it is also available on PS4, Vita, PC and Mac.
Overall this experience I had with this game was quite enjoyable, the story, which you basically put together yourself was gripping enough to leave me wanting more. While I won’t pretend I understood all of the symbolism in the game I think I pretty much got the gist of the story. My ONE complaint with this game which is kind of a major one for me was the “ending”. For a game that tells a great narrative in a very unique way all building up to a major payoff doesn’t quite get it ever at any point. It almost seems like they didn’t know how to end this tale and took a major cop-out with how it wraps up and took a very “artsy” approach. While it didn’t ruin this game for me by any means did instantly knock it out of scoring in the 90s for me to where it is.
Mario Party: Star Rush might be the best Mario Party game since Mario Party 9 on the Wii and its absolutely a big improvement over the other 3DS Mario Party: Island Tour. I think the initial $40 might be a tad high for a mini-game collection, but there’s definitely enough variety, mini-games, and modes to keep you entertained if you want to jump in.

Monomi Park's first and currently only game is an exploratory platformer where you're dropped on an alien planet from far away to become a farmer. Not just any farmer, though. Oh, no. You experience the farmer life collecting Dragon Quest-esque slimes of different species! Your average day consists of catching and feeding them, all the while harvesting their plorts. What is a plort you may ask? Good ole expensive slime poop. Classy way to put it, Monomi.
Demon’s Crystal by StarCruiser Studio is described on xbox one as, “a frenetic twin stick shooter where you guide the Urican demons through countless hazards in order to restore peace to the world.” Now I don’t know about you but that is one of those cringe worthy moments for me as a gamer. Save the world? Urican? That’s a whole lot of build up for a game I have never hear of. But if there is one thing the past has taught me, its to not judge a book till you’ve read it, or at least tried to read it, or its been covered or something like that. So I dove in ready to have a character of demonic origin and to save the world.
