Video Game Fables is an example of a game you shouldn’t judge by its cover or in this case graphical style. It’s clear the solo developer has put a lot of hard work into creating this world whilst adding some unique flavour to the RPG mechanics with its levelling system and use of critical moves. With flexibility in the levelling system, it allows the player to really create the RPG experience that suits them. Sure the game has a little grinding and some sections feel they go on longer than needed. However, the sheer originality and effort on display here, is why I decided to give this the highest recommendation. I found plenty to love and hopefully you will too.

Almost everything in Rite feels good. Sadly, the only thing that didn’t keep me very hooked was the music. It does have good tunes and a cool soundtrack but once you are in the later levels and start getting stuck for a while, the music can become repetitive. Other than that, the fact that it doesn’t bring a story or deeper plots is irrelevant, considering that it has amazing gameplay, smooth controls and follows a good flow of progression with its difficulty. For all those achievers, platformer aficionados or simply any gamer looking for a challenge, this game delivers what you are looking for, presented in a simple yet attractive way. It is easy to learn, hard to master and for its price you will be getting what you pay for and even more.

Liked-a-lot - Bear and Breakfast
Aug 24, 2022

I love this game deeply. It’s funny, it’s charming, it’s relaxing, it’s fun. It’s a little slow at times, but not terribly so. I’ve had a ton of fun in my two playthroughs of this game and am not quite done with this one just yet. I look forward to yet another attempt at a perfect run in the near future. Overall, Bear and Breakfast could be a little better, but it’s a wonderful experience.

I love this game. I plan to play through as much of it as I can. There are tons of puzzles ranging from very simple to extremely difficult. I like the variety of puzzles, of pictures, and the unique additions of the co-op and the story modes. If you like nonograms or number puzzles in general, you can’t go wrong with Logic Pic.

Home Deco Puzzles doesn’t bring out your inner home decorator, but focuses on a game of memory instead. The game is simplistic in design and the background music is peaceful, which makes it relaxing to listen to. Other than that, you will be disappointed if you expect this game to be similar to, for example, Unpacking. The only similarity between the two games is that you unpack boxes.

You don’t have to be a logic puzzle buff to enjoy this. For a game with such challenging puzzles, Treehouse Riddle does a fantastic job of offering assistance to players who need it. The hint system is great, the presentation is solid, and the overall execution is polished. So even though I didn’t enjoy some puzzles (math riddles just aren’t my cup of tea), I can’t help but give this Two Thumbs Up.

Liked-a-lot - We Are OFK
Aug 19, 2022

We are OFK certainly brings something new to the table: a video game that is more of a tv series to promote a soundtrack for a new group. A group that only exists in pixel form, but that makes nice music. I have found the characters that I followed relatable and endearing, but I didn’t like all the strong language that is included. It’s not a game I’d recommend for kids, but I suspect young people will embrace this with gusto. The storytelling is great but I could have done without the mini games at the end of each episode. With all of this in mind I must conclude that I love this new territory that Team OFK is exploring!

Liked-a-lot - Mutropolis
Aug 18, 2022

Mutropolis features great comedy writing, with a simple but satisfying story. Its puzzles are logical but some of the hardest I’ve played in this genre. If you’re a point-and-click adventure fan, I wholeheartedly recommend it despite niggles about animation speed and a bug where the main character disappears from view. For the writing alone, I’m giving this a solid “I Like It A Lot” rating.

Two Point Campus is an enjoyable game that will scratch an itch for any management simulation fan. I love clicking on a student or teacher and watching as the camera follows them through their daily business. From power napping clubs to vampire and Goth pupils to student rock gigs complete with laser light shows: there is always something entertaining and fun to see. A fun game and a must-buy for any fan of the simulation and strategy genre.

I really enjoyed Blossom Tales 2. But it does just feel more the same. It is a new story, a new map to explore, new NPCs and some new items. However, it doesn’t feel like much of a leap from the first game. It also heavily leans into Zelda inspiration with its overall feel from the cheerful noises made when opening a chest to collecting four heart pieces to gain a new health block. There’s no harm in being like Zelda but when Blossom Tales 2 has the chance to be different, like with the choices you make during the story it just doesn’t lean into it enough. Despite all this Blossom Tales 2 is a sequel that plays it safe yet still succeeds thanks to its tight gameplay and exploration. I will admit I found it hard to put down, the game sucks you in and doesn’t let go. It may be familiar but it works. After all when I buy my Wife the same red gerberas, years after being together she’s still happy, so maybe consider buying this as a gift for a loved one. Blossom Tales 2 is still a vibrant colourful flower on the Nintendo Switch and well worth your time.

Mega Man Battle & Fighters on Switch is a great way to enjoy a retro classic without paying a horrific amount of money to obtain an original copy. The emulation is solid but don’t expect any modern improvements to the actual game. This is unapologetically retro in design just the way it used to be. With that in mind, this will not suit everyone. Retro gamers and Mega Man fans though it’s probably your sworn duty to go on the eShop and purchase this so we can get more Neo Geo Color games to the system in future.

Damien (Captain Velvet Meteor) is a very likeable protagonist. Even though most games like this one can turn out to be simplistic with their mechanics, Captain Velvet Meteor: the Jump + Dimensions delivers its tactical strategy gameplay smoothly and engagingly. This game “fun” comes from many aspects, but I would like to remark on its narrative and how the whole concept is built. Moving to another country, that has such a different culture, food and even time zone, is something tough and more for a kid. This game makes an adventure in every situation Damien had to adjust to his new life abroad. It also leaves an important mark with each level that is as enjoyable for an adult as for a kid that is going through something similar. I highly recommend you play this game, especially for strategy and tactic lovers and even more for people who are moving or moved to a different country and struggled to adjust.

Turrican Anthology 1 & 2 is the best way to enjoy the Turrican games on Nintendo Switch provided you don’t mind the steep price tag. I guess you could always ask a loved one to buy it for you for your next birthday or Christmas. But if you do take the plunge you’ll be treated to solid emulation and controls which have been brilliantly adapted to the Nintendo Switch. Some Turrican games are still sadly absent but as it stands this is retro gaming at its finest whether you are a Turrican veteran or discovering it for the very first time.

Running on Magic is definitely worth its price and more. You can beat the whole game quite fast and then you still will have harder modes plus an endless mode to hone your timely jumps and skills. As mentioned before, its visuals and sounds won’t disappoint you and believe me, for those who love the challenge as much as I do, here you will also get that. The running wizard’s silent personality and the Grim Reaper’s peculiarities are hilariously amazing. This game fills in every aspect you need if you have a little time to spare and are looking to feel temporarily entertained. I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it, I surely did.

Liked-a-lot - SokoChess
Aug 13, 2022

In spite of the complexity of the SokoChess, there is a lot to love about it. I’m not usually a huge fan of these types of games because they require chess-specific knowledge, force you to play against people who are way better then you could ever be, or just aren’t fun. But SokoChess makes its puzzles ramp up in a slow way that makes it accessible. That begin said, this game isn’t for everyone. It’s a very thinky game, and you really have to be on your toes to get through some of these levels. There are very few that can be brute forced. For some, this will make the game less appealing, but for many, I feel like this will be a positive. There are not a whole lot of levels so far, but this seems like a game that could be easily added to if the devs have the time. SokoChess is an excellent puzzle game for anyone who digs this kind of niche title.

Liked-a-lot - Super Bullet Break
Aug 12, 2022

This one caught me by surprise. I thought I would like it, then got befuddled by the story so I wasn’t too sure, then sunk hours into it yesterday while listening to podcasts. It’s a little frustrating because every time you fail a map, you fail the whole mission and start over, losing all bullets and items. However, every time you fail new bullets and items become available, so it isn’t a total lost cause. In the end, I enjoyed this quite a bit, but it’s a bit of an odd title. How much you’ll like it depends on how much you enjoy gatcha-games, how much enjoyment (or at least toleration) you have for fan service, and what you think of the genre of games where girls are collectible items. I’m sure it’s not for everyone, but I have never had to tear myself away from the game to write a review before, so that counts for something!

Liked-a-lot - Arcade Paradise
Aug 12, 2022

Arcade Paradise was quite a nice surprise for me. Trying one of these simulators can often feel like a roll of the dice. Not only that these types of games feel very marmite to gamers, some will love them some will hate them. A few glitches and bugs hold the game back from two thumbs up. However, there is something to be said for a game that turns tedious chores into something entertaining. I loved running the laundromat probably more than one should. But setting that aside the wide variety of arcade games to play alone in this experience is better than some retro collections available out there. 90s kid or not I found plenty to love in Arcade Paradise and see myself continuing to play it in the future.

Step By Step Hero has a lot of heart in it. You can tell it’s a pet project that someone poured a lot of thought into. But like many loved projects, this one suffers from what feels like a lack of play testing. There is so much going for this game, and it could be really fun if it weren’t for the step counter. It is incredibly difficult to make a walking simulator, and this one just missed the mark. With all that being said, I am looking forward to PixelSlop’s next title. I’d be interested to see what this developer has learned from making Step By Step Hero and what changes they plan to make in their next title.

As Peter steps into the Antarctic snowstorm, he is suddenly an active participant in his own survival. South of the Circle triumphs by interweaving hopefulness and impending doom without feeling emotionally manipulative. It suggests that life is a culmination of sad and spectacular moments, promises, people, and conversations, all inevitably misremembered. It’s the kind of game that could have made me cry, but instead, it led me to a place of sombre tranquillity. Through Peter, we are advised not to judge stories by their destination, but by their precious in-betweens: a sugar cube plopped into a cup of tea, a train ride, a shared summer sunset, and a cumulonimbus cloud stupendously blooming.

Cleo – a pirate’s tale was a delightful surprise for me; I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the game as much as I did. The story is enjoyable, it is one of the games that you want to see the storyline through to the end. It is not a long game, coming in between three to four hours of gameplay time, but it is a few hours of good entertainment that I would recommend you try.
