The story has no depth, and to be honest, it’s rather boring. The actual mode could have been fun if the story was more meaningful so that you could engage with it. Fewer cut scenes would have helped too. Had the developers focused on the tv style studio presenting, with the strange interviews and built on that, they could have had a fun single player experience.
At most Donut County will offer a good 3-4 hours of solid gameplay that is light-hearted and enjoyable. The game flags as slightly too easy to breeze through, but in terms of the fun gameplay in creating havoc with holes in the ground, I would definitely recommend picking this up for a session one night.
I really enjoyed playing Odium To the Core, it’s one of those games that has a high level of replayability. It’s a game that just flows, as does time. So, five minutes will quickly become twenty, then an hour if you’re not careful. It’s fun yet simplistic, the level design is fantastic and the music throughout…. well just put a pair of headphones on, crank up the volume and have fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing Mutant Year Zero- Road to Eden, the story is wonderfully told, giving you a real sense of adventure, and purpose. The journey throughout is filled with dangerous encounters, that really make you think about your strategy as you look to overcome difficulties. There’s a fantastic in game level up system, bringing a lovely RPG element to it. In a nutshell the game is excellent, and is currently included in xbox gamepass, so why not give it ago, you won’t regret it!
I enjoyed Noir chronicles, having played many game’s like this in terms of its genre, I thought the story was nicely told, the puzzles were nicely thought out and different. It kept me on my toes, wanting to progress. The only downside to hidden object puzzle games as whole is, the length of time to complete. Noir Chronicles: City of Crime, being short.
Fallout 76 combines a large portion of Fallout 4 assets and flaws without making any real much-needed refinements for the online aspect. The world is vast and at times lifeless without NPCs and a sparsely player count to each server. Where Fallout 76 excels is providing hours of online fun when you team up. Players can help build your bases and you can take over areas such as a food factory to produce Preserved InstaMash, which was a real Fallout highlight for me. Hopefully future content and patches will get Fallout 76 to where it needs to be, as the world and mechanics are there, it just lacks any real polish, partly due to its aging, clunky game engine.
Being a Sega fan boy in the past, I’ve played quite a few full motion video games, some good, some not so good. The Shapeshifting Detective is held in my good book, as there is plenty in this role playing FMV to keep you captivated in your role and coming back for more as you look to hook and reel your killer in, solving the murder and not getting caught!
Volume 1 was a brief introduction of what’s to come in Thief of Thieves and the narrative storytelling combined with the stealth gameplay was a balanced mix of playing and watching character dialogue. There’s plenty to look forward to in terms of how the story progresses from here in Volume 2, which should be out in December. According to devs Rival Games there will be monthly releases up until February.
The Long Journey home is graphically beautiful, the colours are rich, vibrant, which help bring the game to life, as does the game’s score which adds to the atmosphere of your surroundings. Personally, I really enjoyed the game, a real sense of adventure, in a never-ending galaxy, with classic sci-fi influences. The hidden stories throughout are a joy, full of treasure and suspense that really keep you on your toes in this wonderful journey.
There is a lot of content on offer here, but the uninspiring track layouts and imprecise controls led to me getting frustrated the faster I was expected to go and ultimately made completing the game a bit of a chore. It did grow on me, but ultimately it’s tough to recommend.
If you like the Overcooked formula and want more of a challenge I’d say this is well worth the purchase. If not, you won’t find anything new here to win you over.
Guns, Gore and Cannoli 2 is a fantastically hand drawn side-scroller making small steps of improvement from the original, and with the addition of 4-player multiplayer there’s plenty for this to stand out as a sequel. Now all I want is a roll and slide mechanic to try and do none hit runs on levels.
Fishing Sim World is one for the fishing enthusiasts with the time and patience to invest in learning the game’s core set of controls for catching fish. Play the long learning game and you’ll be pulling fish after fish out the water, but if you struggle to get past this barrier you’ll be throwing your rod into the lake and heading home for the day.
I can’t recommend Hollow Knight enough. If you have even a passing interest in plaformers or Metroidvania’s this is up there with the best. It can seem overwhelming as, although I finished the main story and got one of the three endings there was still so much to see and do.
If you like games like Trials or Speedrunners this game will be right up your street. However, if you get easily frustrated by these types you won’t find anything new here to change your mind. I’m off for one more go. Gotta top those leaderboards…
Planet Alpha is a fun to play platforming adventure set at a fast pace and on a fascinating world to explore. Once you’ve learned that you can control time of day, the puzzle mechanics become more unique and interesting. It’s just let down by the lack of unique gameplay compared to previous atmospheric platformers released.
I enjoyed it despite the short play time and as I said previously, achievement hunters will grab an easy 1000G here. It’s worth the fiver even if there were times that it showed it’s mobile roots. That’s not a bad thing though, it was light and breezy and a nice stress free game you can hammer through quickly. A nice little pallette cleanser if you will. It was good fun and worth a look.
The Mooseman is interesting to play and brings a glimmer of Limbo-esque gameplay to the table. I would however, be more inclined to replay Limbo as I have done before, whereas The Mooseman is just missing that something in its gameplay that makes me want to enjoy the challenges it has to offer.
So what do I think overall? Well, it’s an excellent idea, it’s well executed, it’s addictive and it looks really nice. Is it fun? Yes, but it gets grindy quickly and the save bug really put me off putting too much more time in. Would I recommend it? If you have Game Pass, you’ve got nothing to lose as it’s available on there. If not, take advantage of the current offer and try it for only a few quid. If you don’t, then it’s a yes and no.
If you haven’t played the original, don’t worry you can jump right into Overcooked 2. Overall, it’s a superior title to the original and delivers a much more solid package. However, as a returning player you’ll know what to expect so if more of the same isn’t your thing then I’d avoid it.
