8.5 / 10.0 - Pacific Drive
Mar 8, 2024

A car, a delivery and a dream: to arrive safely. Pacific Drive is a weird fiction game for those who like systems and for those who don't mind spending as much time preparing as they do driving.

Whether with its human and dark stories, its fun building mode or its RPG aspect of world exploration with its secrets and objectives, the first Builders manages to build much more than just a solid foundation for its bizarre gameplay idea.

Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes is a sequel that builds even further on the foundation that the original established with its unique fighting dynamics and pace, and manages to bring some interesting novelties to the genre. It takes a very important step for the future of the series and French-Bread, and the visual improvements, accessibility and netcode rollback are very welcome.

Shiren The Wanderer's sixth journey is very close to its other five, but that's not a bad thing. In a series of games so refined and unique, it doesn't take much to please the fan who has been waiting almost a decade for a new opportunity to climb a dungeon and die a lot in the process. And while there is an attempt to give this game its own identity with new mechanics, it doesn't break away from its established formula - which will inevitably put off many players. As much as the behemoth system is disappointing and the difficulty curve can be strange, The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is still a very solid experience for previous fans of the series, and a decent gateway for anyone who wants to experience this amusingly twisted legend of Sisyphus.

And as a fan of indie games, I'm very pleased to see this type of game developed by Japanese, breaking away from the models of the big studios. As much as I'm a fan of the games produced by these studios, I also want to know more about the stories that small studios and developers have to tell. ghostpia was a pleasant surprise and I'm looking forward to the second season. Finding out what's beyond the dreams, if there's a home to return to...

Persona 3 Reload is a must for all fans of the series and a good entry point into the franchise. With its philosophical themes and touching, reflective messages, the title has become one of my favorite games of recent years.

Even with a few problems in the main story, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is one of the best games in the franchise and is extremely captivating.

Even going in with an open mind and no expectations, Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash ends up disappointing. With ideas that are actually nice, the game fails in something extremely important, which is execution.

In a huge, gigantic tsunami of problems that go far beyond the game itself, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was and is extremely poorly regarded, but when you play it, you find something that goes far beyond the mediocre.

The Apollo Justice collection encapsulates all the lack of focus and desperate search for a path that the series has gone through after its initial three games. At the same time, it brings at least one great game to the series.

9 / 10 - Tekken 8
Feb 2, 2024

The truth is that, despite having written so much so far, it all comes down to one feeling: Tekken is really cool. It's great to play, to watch and even to listen to. Even though I'm not a very good player, I love simply watching my character move.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink has great combat, a good and objective story and great replayability potential with its online mode. If well utilized and updated, perhaps we'll see a new competitor for games of this format.

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is very well designed and it's very difficult to point out any flaws that really bothered me about it. There are decisions that differ from Reverie Under the Moonlight both aesthetically and mechanically that make me see people preferring the previous game.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown opens the year of 2024 in grand fashion. The grand return of a classic franchise and a game that entertained me in the same way as the first title. The game is fun, challenging, polished, aesthetically pleasing and shows that when Ubisoft focuses its efforts on the player-game experience, without focusing only on services, and respecting our intelligence, it gets it right.

The Caligula Effect 2 takes all the good ideas of its predecessor and improves on them considerably. It's a game that will go unnoticed by 90% of the public, but those who play it will experience one of the most well-crafted and explored stories in the niche.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a rare gem of PSP action games and I'm glad I finally got to experience it. As well as being engaging, it brings a taste of that Nihon Falcom era that we're not likely to see again any time soon. Great combat and a predictable but engaging story make Nayuta one of the most special games of the year.

Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 presents a more mature story than its predecessor, once again bringing the horror of war to life. Although very similar to the previous installment, the new title brings qualities of life that stand out considerably.

Trinity Trigger doesn't try to innovate. The game has a simple, well-executed story, engaging combat and extra content that doesn't bore players. It's a great choice for those who want something less flashy and to pass the time.

PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo certainly won't be on most people's most-played games of the year list, but those who do will find a very well-written and immersive experience. The game is undoubtedly one of the great surprises of 2023 and I hope Square Enix continues to bet on more titles like this, as they are the breath of fresh air we need in this industry.
